long shot but go on another android device (if it was using android) and sign into the same account and grab "android device manager" from playstore  if the phones been on and had a connection to the net it will have reported the location.

In math we trust.
mac address can be changed with mac spoffing thats a simple hacking tool even possible in busybox
Yes but only temporary. Usually mac address is stored in a read-only type of memory, can't be edited...

Yes you can use the mac to try track your phone. Calling the cops would be just a waste of time, invest that time in searching a nice program to import the mac and search your phone. You can also contact your carrier, they can also help you, if they want to normally Smiley
"invest that time in searching a nice program" There is not such a magic program AFAIK.
My carriers assistant confused MAC address with mac os. He is completely ignorant.

When I lost my phone I used my devices on google to locate it. Wasn't exact, but when I saw where it was, I knew exactly who had it.

But you were lucky enough that someone didn't turn off your device, and your GPS was open by default.

[/quote]Aaww! I'm sorry that happened, love. I recommend pockets with zippers. They sure do come in handy. It seems like there was no luck with the cops, as I presumed.....

Thank you for empathizing.
It is crazy how a cell phone with gps and 3g just 'can't be located'

Did you inquire at the lost and found at the mall?
Maybe someone turned it in.

Who is your carrier?

Yes I did.

Oh no! Where in the mall do you think you left it? Also, don't worry. You sound like quite the detective to me. You'll find it! I don't know about calling cops though. Cops these days don't care about anything, and get paid by the hour.

I was resting in a sofa located in a public corridor. It somehow slipped out of my pocket and someone found it there.
It is now turned off....

I think it would be possible, but would be unusual work and cops won't do it.

And if it was stolen then probably is already sold, anyway

Today I talked both with my carrier and the cops.
While it looks like both of them don't care, the cops filed a report it was lost.
The assistant in my carrier's shop looks like very ignorant.
While I was holding in my hands the box with "Sony xperia" label, I told him I had the mac address of my phone.
He said; what, do you have an apple device?

How on Earth can a tech assistant confuse these two terms?Huh
It is quite irritating!!!!  Angry Angry Angry Angry

 Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

I will be short.

Part 1
I lost my smart-phone (Sony xperia branded) roughly 7 hours ago in a shopping center aka mall.
It was a fully functioning phone, and I remember that less than five minutes before the event I had a call with a friend of mine.
I realized the bad fact roughly after 20 minutes after the call was made.
Now I am making calls to track it, only to see that it is turned off!
Obviously, means one thing, theft.

Part 2
Good news: About three hours ago, I came up with a genius idea.
I configured my modem/router to not use a password authentication roughly two years ago.
The thing is called MAC address filtering. You need to tell the router what MAC addresses to allow and done.
No 'insert password hassle'. Anyway, I know this brings a security issue as MACs can be spoofed by who cares when it makes your life easier?
To the point; I got the MAC address of my smart-phone! Every device able to connect to the Internet has at least one such address which is unique,
it is not dynamic like ip addresses.

Part 3
So do you think I could track my phone even in the event of a software/firmware format?
Can the cops track your by MAC address?

Quote from: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address
Spying

According to Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency has a system that tracks the movements of everyone in a city by monitoring the MAC addresses of their electronic devices.[13] As a result of users being trackable by their devices' MAC addresses, Apple Inc. has started using random MAC addresses in their iOS line of devices while scanning for networks.[14] If random MAC addresses are not used, researchers have confirmed that it is possible to link a real identity to a particular wireless MAC address.[15]

What should my steps be to limit any personal data breach/leak?
I haven't called the cops yet, but I plan on doing so tomorrow...
