yeah, even the newest, lamest ALt coins like Feathercoin are dominated by GPUs, your cpu mining won't get you anything on any alt coin.... they are all based on sha256 or scrypt and gpu miners are avail for both, so on day 1 a new alt coin comes out the difficulty skyrokets overnight... take the time you'd spend setting up cpu mining and spend it tweaking your GPU settings/clockrates

Yikes! Those boards go for $600. Sell it, it's overkill formining. A board for $100-130 is sufficient.

CPU mining is pretty inefficient, but it could be cool to set up as a hobby project.

From what I've heard, it is probably best to get a minimal CPU, and then upgrade your GPU in order to be able to do maximum calculations as the GPU is useless. However, GPU's are dying from what I've heard so it may be better to sell the mother board (which is a beautiful piece of hardware), and use the money to buy ACIS, and maybe you could get more calculations that way.

It has 2 x 8x PCI-E, and 1 x 4x PCI-E. Question is.. are these powered? Will they run a 7950 without additional power? The board is a super micro X7DB3. The Xeon's are cheap, and I am sure I only need 1, and the ram I have laying around as needed. Will this mine?

modern gpu's get their power from power supply... so you need a big 650+watt power supply for 2-3 cards

Gotcha. I also fully understand how to make it work.

This is this weekends project. Back to the main topic.

Should I invest in badass cpu's or bare minimum for the server board? Will this board run 3 7950's? 2? If so, will it run them on its own, or do I need to power them? Trash the board or can it mine basically? I know it can run Server 08 R2 with 1.5k users like a frickin champ as I do this daily.

Would it be worth buying badass xeons to set it to mine some alt coin, and have 3 7950's humming BTC or LTC? RAM is obviously not an issue as it has 8 banks as well. Looking for advice. The board is strong.

CPUs are not good for anything ... I think 1/100th the speed of gpus

I understand they are not for BTC, LTC.. but there are new coins out there that CPU still works. I understand the power spent vs. reward. But some of the coin markets are in their infancy. And a CPU can gen coins. Or have I lost it?

It's beautiful :O

May not be the worth the cost of Xeons, you could probably sell that board for a good bit as well.
