This bull will try to shake you off. Hold tight!
There is supposed to be news released by ebay in the middle of this month related to the changes to their categories... which as far I understand will still include something related to virtual currencies.

Buckle up.

Maybe they will allow for some sellers to accept Bitcoin as payment but it will be in it's own category?  It might allow for a small amount of people to buy and sell using their site but I do not think it will become a "mainstream" option on their site yet.  It will be a start if they even do that though.  I know etsy already does so perhaps that is why ebay is feeling a little pressure.  It is hard to say what they will actually do, unless there is some insider info out there???

Maybe ... Smiley

Yes I know we are in the speculation forum but what use is there to speculate something very unlikely is about to happen?

What are the chances for your scenario to unfold you think? 9 in 10? 1 in 10?

Other than that, nice to see you again bullish BitChick  Smiley

This will not get the price high, anyway.

hmm I don't know, right now it's nearly $10 higher than yesterday. There's definitely some movement.

But can we really attribute that to this ebay "news"?

 there is no ebay news.

however i am selling a rare print on ebay and i do accept btc or ltc

I don't think it would make sense for them to really allow the trade of virtual currencies anyway. They aren't an exchange. You can't buy Euros with USD (as far as I know) on the site, so why bitcoin?

IIRC there were silver 10euro coins which people stockpiled and sold at a premium after their metal value did rise above face value. But you have a point, the currency section is strictly for "collectibles" and it's hard to argue about something distinct which can be collected in the case of Bitcoins. If you were to sell an Euro money transfer for Dollars you would have similar problems.

They are considering adding a new category 'virtual currencies' and they possibly might improve the trading of bitcoins on their website. (Maybe more secure for seller and cheaper for buyer?)

From the looks of it they have already considered it and decided against it.

<-- You can trade these instead.

Feel free to see the glass as half empty. There are plenty of signs that point towards they deciding in favor of it. Maybe they removed the category entry because they want to first stock in some cheap bitcoins before BTC value goes parabolic..

You were already wrong about the video when you claimed that it's the work of some rogue admin. It was indeed made by eBay for "informational purposes".

Let's recap the recent signs of eBay's change of policy towards bitcoins:

1. A professional quality Youtube animation with comments disabled that credits eBay in the end
2. This same video presented on a blog post at deals.ebay.com
3. eBay spokeswoman commenting on the video calling it "purely informational" thus validating eBay being aware of the video
4. eBay listing virtual currencies in September category changes
5. Mike Carson from eBay contacting an active bitcoin seller and asking for advice

Feel free to think all those things are just hot air/strange concidence but I don't think you need to be "desperate" to take it as a bullish signal.

Obviously ebay adopting bitcoin as a payment mechanism would be very bullish. However none of those points you mention indicate this to happen.

They are considering adding a new category 'virtual currencies' and they possibly might improve the trading of bitcoins on their website. (Maybe more secure for seller and cheaper for buyer?)

That's nice but trading of bitcoins on ebay is nothing new and something completely different than ebay implementing bitcoin as payment system, right!?

it would not be ebay that accepts bitcoin, it would be the sellers that sell their. you do not HAVE to accept Paypal as payment on ebay. you can choose to only accept bank transfer, and even "Other payment method" so i guess you can choose other and type in your bitcoin address in the box below  Cheesy

So with a little hassle and the seller willing to accept BTC, you would be able to buy from him stuff for free and sell him BTC for free.  Grin

only scenario i see ebay ever accepting btc is if they get a percentage of bitcoins from the sale, which kinda defeats the purpose of bitcoin. i would like the option to be available, but their pals paypal and bankers would not let that happen.

Bullish as hell.
How is it bullish if ebay has nothing to do with it? It's just a youtube video...

Even if eBay didn't make it, somebody did. Worst case scenario, neutral effect on the market.

So you only admit bullish or neutral.. what about worst case is a really bad sign that some people are that desperate to try anything to avoid the incoming crash? Just saying...

Interestingly, the info you were pointing to is now missing from that page. When I first saw it yesterday, the page originally listed the addition of a new "Virtual Currencies" selling category, which I took to mean that they might be about to allow sales of bitcoins themselves on eBay. If that's still true, it would actually be evidence against the theory that they're about to begin accepting bitcoin as payment. They couldn't both sell bitcoins as merchandise and also accept them as payment, right?

1. SEO:

eBay deals is similar to Goupon imho. They are in a huge marketing phase right now and it could be that the blog post is intended for search engines aka. SEO optimization.

It's not linked in the blog itself, get it? Ask yourself, why is that?

Totally. That was the initial reason for this conclusion. It shouldn't necessarily be found by human, but by robots.

The reference to the blog entry is in their sitemap, which is crawled by the search engine bots:

http://deals.ebay.com/blog/sitemap.xml ->
http://deals.ebay.com/blog/sitemap_index.xml ->
http://deals.ebay.com/blog/page-sitemap.xml

I know this is vague and speculative and one might ask: why would they put so much effort in this? Maybe the above stated statement should be redefined to: "It should be found by those who are interested in this topic and search engines."

edccdn.com is an external content provider, I guess. (recipes, thanksgiving, tablets)

2. Regulation:

When I called back Mike was very nice. He stated that I have sold a lot of Bitcoin on eBay and wanted to know my experience with it and was it positive.

(...)

He mentioned that they were considering policy changes to allow it to be sold but he stated that "we can't ask our user to register with Fincen" I agreed its too costly.

Michael Carson's duties at Ebay (taken from his Linkedin profile):

Quote
- Responsible for developing and implementing policies to effectively manage regulatory, industry and brand risks.
- Interface with third parties, including government officials, law enforcement, trade groups and individual companies.

Sweet Cheesy

It's not necessarily about adoption, but a Bitcoin friendly policy change for sellers and buyers.

IMO - the title of this article, and theerefore the sentiment it was trying to exlpore is wrong.

eBay endorsing bitcoin.. I'm sorry, i must have missed something.

eBay haven't done anything of the kind. They haen't endorsed ANYTHING.. and have even said their payment methods haven't changed and that it was a purely informational video. On a blog post too i might add.
Nothing to see here move on.

(Also, i'm not surprised it was taken off the site, with the ammount of foaming and frothing at the mouth it has created, not to mention site traffic)

Might also have been for 'testing the waters' purposes. You know, to gauge reation over a short space of time. Kinda like eBay trying to figure out the size of the bitcoin community by posting something on a relaively obscure blog and sitting back to watch the reaction.

At least that's my 2 satoshi's worth on it.

If you enter "bitcoin" in the search page it turns out it was posted on August 20, 2013 4:30 pm.
It should turn up currently at this page: http://deals.ebay.com/blog/page/20/

But it doesn't.
Looks like somebody who works there is a Bitcoin Evangelist and tries to make it look as official as possible while trying to avoid detection from eBay.

Does anybody have an idea how to get blog posts up to ebay deals?
Probably, if you're a merchant there, you may simply add you own content, and once it's approved by ebay, it shows up as a deal in the blog.
If that's the case, this video means nothing.

On the other hand, Ebay will probably be working on bitcoin acceptance right now.
They're in a highly competitive market, and once their competition gets going, they better be ready.
Same goes for their competitors, obviously.
