There's already a whole bunch of stuff on it though, so the blockchain (2+ GB) won't fit.

Thanks guys. I'm finished the backups now, and decided the blockchain is too big to fit on the same thumb drive. It's more convienient and probably safer to redownload it.

I think it's worth the trouble. Downloading the blockchain takes a long time and plenty of bandwidth.

Yes, you can port the blockchain.
I did that when my windows system blew up the HDD and I installed Ubuntu, but used the blockchain I had recovered from the failing HDD Wink

Assuming that you are using the vanilla client, the OS doesn't really affect the blockchain database format so long as the file is named correctly and in the correct folder. But unless you have some real bandwidth issues, it's probably not worth the risk or the trouble.

I am not sure how it works but there is a blockchain out there on github that you can check out.

Since the entire point is to save bandwidth, downloading a blockchain on github is not a very attractive choice for me.
