Update 2:

Nevermind! Problem fixed.

It was caused by the mainboard. After some time with Google I had to find out that a lot of people experience random freezing on higher system load levels with the GA-Z77... series mainboards of Gigabyte. For some people it worked by adusting BCLK to 100.1MHz instead of 100 but not in my case. I just went back to store for a change to another brand.

Now a ASRock is working nice and smooth, also with Z77 chipset.

Update:

The problem is obviously not related to Windows 8. I booted from a USB flash disk with live-miner and after a minute of mining the system froze the same way as it does in Windows.

Also I have monitored temperatures of CPU and GPU in Windows while doing another GUIminer run. CPU is stable at around 30°C and GPU still well below 60°C. Fans are all auto but there are no changes in fan speed or whatsoever that could point to a rise of temps before the systems freezes.

Anybody with a good idea?

Hi there,

I'm not completely new to GPU mining but still learning. Now I face a strange problem which I was not yet able to identify or fix.

It's about a brand new built PC, mainly for office use but since it will be up for 10 to 12 hours a day I thought I better put a card which can also turn some watts into hashes. Here is the Setup:

  • Gigabyte Z77M-D3H
  • Intel Core-i5 3470
  • 2x4GB Corsair DDR3-1600
  • Sapphire HD7770 vapor-x
  • S-ATA III HDD and S-ATA II CD-ROM
  • 630W power supply

The system is running Windows 8/64, fresh install with all current patches.

Driver installed is Catalyst is 13.1 with the OpenCL that came with it.

Now, whenever I start any of the miners it works fine for about a minute, then the whole machine freezes completely. No warning, apparently no crashed task, no errors - the whole thing simply stops working, HW reset button or power switch are the only ways out of there.

While I was typing my post here I also ran the Windows built-in system performance test and guess what -> Yes, the system froze again without any of the miners running. Therefore I'm sure it's not directly related to mining but I know that a lot of people here are pushing their setups and especially their GPUs to the limits, so one might have an idea where to look for the problem.

So far I have checked and redone all expansion slot and cable connections. Windows Eventlog entries are Informations only. Soem errors are triggered on next boot due to the missing proper shutdown but that's all.

Does anyone have an idea where to look for potential causes of this behavior?

Thanks!
