Chinese markets are definitely one key to it though. But I also think action driven during "down" times are also another significant factor.

Because Bitcoin is all over the world and for someone day can be not in a same time when someone else enjoy the night time ATM.

Pattern on price are usually just coincidence.
When it went from 420 to 550 it was moving at the same time as dec/jan in the night. 
Many of the top end ASIC are produced in China, so they still have a great deal of influence.
