Use your phone camera as your PC webcam. I don't know if this method is safe enough, but Linux OS should be more secure than Windows.
Security note:
  • do not scan QR codes for your sensitive data.
  • check the scan results several times before moving the next step.

What are you reading the QR code from?
Can you try another app on the laptop?

Phone based but: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/scanning-qr-codes-do-you-find-some-wallets-work-better-then-others-5422223

So it's probably not just you.

It might be hardware related, but you could also try posting what is in the log file so that we can check and see if there were any errors when you were trying top load the webcam through the wallet

In your wallet, Go to Help the show Log File and the paste here what is in the text file.

Will sparrow wallet work with a webcam? My (older) laptop camera doesn't seem able to scan an animated qr code.
On linux fyi
Thanks in advance!

If you can see webcam visuals when you click the camera icon on Sparrow Wallet then most likely your webcam is not good enough to capture the QR codes. And you mentioned it as an old laptop then the webcam resolution will be a lot less and even it's not great in new-gen laptops.

You can add an external webcam if a QR code scan is your primary need just go with the copy-paste method (which I always prefer).

That's pretty bad for an old laptop but you can try to config sparrow wallet camera settings by editing the ~/.sparrow/config

Then look for this line
Code:
"hdCapture": false,

Replace the false with true or vice versa if it is set to true and then try to scan the QR code again.
