Moved around a bunch of stuff in what we call "The Back Room" in the basement and found a huge nest of Brown Spiders.

Happy, happy, joy, joy.

I guess it was hard to tell from that picture in the OP just how big they are. But to me, it ain't just size but how crazy looking they are. Bugs can get pretty gnarly, man. Gotta recognize.  Smiley

that's a tough one. at first, my gut reaction was -- find a way to remove them whilst still saving them. but that is tough one. i'm not sure what the options are, but the prospect of infestation is pretty scary, even if they aren't deadly.

wish i could be more help in deciding. good luck!

Before killing any spiders you should think about the big number of insects that is consumed by even a single spider. Without spiders humanity would be plagued with hoards of insects.

All spiders in central Europe are not really dangerous for humans - the vast majority of them can't even bite through human skin. A tennis ball size swelling from a such a spider is definitely a myth. I've handled quite a few spiders and have never been bitten - not even an attempted bite.

You don't have to love them, but please don't kill them.

"the vast majority of them can't even bite through human skin"

That's bullshit. Almost all spider bites can easily bypass a human's skill.

"tennis ball size swelling from a such a spider is definitely a myth"

Again, bullshit. Ever heard of staph infection? It can be caused via a spider bite. (Technically, any sort of puncture to the skin, but spider bites are common enough).

Then again, I probably wouldn't kill the spider, as I'm sure it'll catch a wasp or two around these parts making it worth my while. (I much rather get bit by a spider than stung by a wasp).

So what are you doing about them?

Still undecided right now.

I do have both false widows and lace weavers spiders.

I think most here would nuke the house if they had too many and they became pests,  im not sure i have too many adults right now but i will by the time the babies outside get big no doubt.  This is posing me a moral dilemma, i gave up killing animals years ago.

I have this image of you standing at the window contemplating what to do, just catch em up, and pass the buck to someone else like I had said before  Wink

As much as people say they do not harm, they can get very annoying. I used to have a spider in the toilet, you keep having the feeling this guy is always watching.
Put sulfuric acid/gas in your house, they do not like this kind of stuff and will leave the house, gasses is probably the most friendly way.

I generally don't kill spiders if I find them in the house, then again, around where I live there really isn't any spiders that can do any damage.  We do get the odd black widow, but I've never seen one in the house.

I used to get wolf spiders where I used to live, at least I think that's what they were.  They used to creep me out, they get pretty big and you could hear them run across the floor.

Just leave them be for the most part.  If they infest you're house though, it's a whole new ball game and I'd be calling an exterminator asap.

You're Canadian, of course you don't kill spiders.

Here, we have three rules:
1) If jumps, it dies.
2) If has visible fangs, it dies.
3) If moves, it dies quickly.

I rather like that although on my property I leave the snakes alone because they eat lots of mice and bugs.

My default is: Normally i try and save any living animals.

I have about 20 baby ones around a window outside what would u do? (see poll)

Spiders kill other spiders. When spiders come into contact with one another, a gladiator-like competition frequently unfolds – and the winner eats the loser. If your basement hosts common long-legged cellar spiders, this is why the population occasionally shifts from numerous smaller spiders to fewer, larger spiders. That long-legged cellar spider, by the way, is known to kill black widow spiders, making it a powerful ally.

Spiders shouldn't jump. I do not approve of animals I have trouble seeing jumping around in my house. Cats, I can see. Dogs, I can see (and they generally can't jump for shit anyway). Spiders blend in and jump 50x their body height on top of being hairy, ugly fucks which bite and cause hives. Fuck that.

I don't mind snakes, but the first time I find a biting snake that jumps 20 feet in the air without notice, there will be one more decapitated snake on this planet.

Are they poisonous? If not, let them be and you'll notice that the level of annoying insects around your house will go down drastically.
All spiders are venomous, though generally no more so than bees and wasps; with most spiders, a bite is just a minor annoyance unless you're allergic. Though spiders rarely bite humans in the first place. They're simply nowhere near as dangerous as most people imagine.

I never thought that arachnophobia is such a widespread mental disorder. Sad I suggest that people wanting to kill spiders out of fear learn more about them first.

Most spiders are not harmful, instead they are very helpful keeping harmful insects from spreading. Even those few that could be harmful do only defend themselves when threatened. No spider deliberately attacks or bites humans.

Show some respect for living animals that have done nothing to you!

In my room is plenty of spiders web in the corners of my ceiling. Some spiders nests are under my bed and all over in dark places I am afraid to look. I never killed any spider and they never bothered me. Occasionally huge spiders are running through my carpet but usually they are sitting silent in their corners. So I guess spiders are not that bad, they eat other more harmful bugs, so don't kill them.

Spiders eat each other after mating, so I think the nest will shrink. Some mammals also eat spiders. The theory is that spiders go inside your house because of the temperature, so you could test this myth by putting a lot of ice cubes near them  Smiley

I've never been afraid of spiders, so I really don't care what I do with them. But to be honest, if you want to kill them, try this: Just spray a cleaner on them. It's a swift death. If you want to save them, spray water on them, but not enough to drown them.

My parents had a ton of baby spiders on their door one day. They chose to spray cleaner on them. My Mom hates spiders, for some reason.

I wouldn't kill them. If they're not harmful, then they'll help you more. I hate wasps, and mosquitoes. So it's a win/win.

The only time I would ever flamethrower insects if I was dealing with poisonous ones or perhaps wasps, I fucking hate wasps because they aren't friendly at all. If you can't get them off the way I mentioned you could also just remove the window sill if there are that many and brush them off with a broom or something to make them bugger off somewhere else.

Fuck no, I hate spiders lol. You're just lucky these arent black widows.

Is the house your renting in old? Whats more annoying is the silverfish that crawls on the wall..

House is like 10 years old on a new estate, lots of people look after their gardens i guess thats why so many spiders.

I dont like spiders either just dont like killings things even more, must be half hippy or something.  If there is a potentially health threat im all for killing stuff so yeah if they black widows kill them but also move house.   Although something that can bite and cause a tennis ball swelling and 20 babies outside my window is getting close to a threat?

No spider fans so far its not looking good.

Just actually tried to get one of the little baby bastards on a lolly pop stick, not much luck they shoot back into window cracks soon as i get near.

Maybe i should move house to avoid bad karma, only renting.

Here, we have three rules:
1) If jumps, it dies.
2) If has visible fangs, it dies.
3) If moves, it dies quickly.

Follow these rules lol.

And you get hair spray and a lighter if you want to have fun.

For every spider you see, there are 2,000 you don't.

These won't be missed.   Grin

I have false widows in and around my property in UK, a few have come in the house.  Here is one from other day:

Apparently they aren't dangerous but if they bite can still give a tennis ball size swelling < what if one bites on your eye ball right? Grin

My default is: Normally i try and save any living animals.

I have about 20 baby ones around a window outside what would u do? (see poll)
