Yea, no money to build/buy new hardware
With steem you must build optimized miner (algorithm as you say) . Its not worth it. Better to optimize ethereum, monero or btc.

no you can't ... steem uses a new algorithm and can be mined only by CPU on Ubuntu ... and mining at this time is useless tbh it takes 2 years to get your coins so ...
