Thanks everyone for your congratulations on getting the coin back!  I appreciate it a lot and am very happy to have it back.  I intend on selling the coin and giving some of the income to the person that notified me about the appearance of the coin.  Merit will be given too Smiley

congrats for getting the coin back!
just out of curiosity, how did you got your coin back? as far as I understand, someone stole it from the mail, and tried to auction it on GovDeals. How did you managed to get your coin back after filling the lost mail report? Did USPS investigated & found the identity of the user trying to sell the stolen coin in GovDeals?

Govdeals.com is a site where surplus government items are auctioned off.  This includes items lost in the mail.  Someone saw the picture of my 2014 Ravenbit MS 68 coin and sent me a PM on Bitcointalk to let me know it may be my item, along with an image of it.  I checked govdeals auctions and the coin had the same digits as my lost coin.  I contacted govdeals live chat and asked for the contact information for the seller.  I also asked the seller a question online.  In addition, I filed another lost mail claim form on USPS.com and referenced my original lost mail claim from Feb 2018.  I spent time on the phone with several people and sent a bunch of emails.  It paid off, because the next day USPS shipped my item back to me, and I have it in my hands now.

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for all your input and assistance on this topic.  I recently had someone PM me and let me know they saw the item posted on govdeals.  I am very greatful to this newbie for taking the time to do so.

I contacted the USPS through their lost first class mail form on their website, and the item is back in my hands.  It will be offered for auction shortly.  If anyone would prefer to PM me a fair offer, feel free to do so and I'll consider it.

I'll be giving a portion of the sell price to the person that PMed me and let me know they saw my item on Govdeals.

I never expected to get it back, but I'm very happy I did.  There are still a lot of good people in the world.

congrats for getting the coin back!

Wow, unless they could set up a search alert, I wouldn't have had time to keep an eye out on government auction sites!

All found items that are in lost mail that cannot be returned to the addresse or the sender are auctioned off.

I looked on their website for months when my coins where lost, but they never turned up on the auction website

Could you share the URL for that auction site?  I tried googling but didnt really find anything.

Govdeals.com or govdeals.gov something like that

I've never seen any crypto related stuff on it since I found out about the site and started checking daily

Pretty bad that they auction stuff on and i wonder who/where the proceeds go to.

Where the proceeds go to...I'ma take a guess and say Mr. Uncle Sam, probably inappropriately allocated.  I am now just finding out about this auctioning myself.  Killyou would appreciate the URL as well.  Thx.

Yeah first i heard about it too, i guess i just thought there was a blackhole of undelivered mail but i guess that wouldnt make sense either.  This is one of my worst fears and while low priced coins i wouldnt still have an issue with anything worth a decent amount its worth the extra for registered.

I agree with owlcatz, please visit your local post office and speak to the post master.
You can call them too, but it is a lot easier to deal with a human in person.

The mail does not go directly to the destination post office.  It is routed from your post office to a central sorting hub first.
Depending on how the envelope was packed, it most likely got caught in their automatic sorting machine.
Much like a copy machine, it has rollers to move envelopes around.
I received samples in the past that got gobbled up.  It look 3-4 weeks and arrived inside an another envelope.

If this is the case, not to worry, the post office has a people to deal with this and it will eventually make its way to the destination.

ALWAYS send registered. I do anyway with any valuable cryptocoin. I would rather meet in person...but when I cannot...registered the way to go...the few extra bucks buy peace of mind

Sorry to hear of the loss. Unless you purchased insurance I don't think USPS has any liability. Priority Mail with tracking provides $50 insurance and you can buy extra plus you have tracking. Expensive items should probably best be sent registered mail.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the help and assistance you have offered.  I appreciate it.

Sorry to hear- I will keep an eye out on ebay for you.

Thank you very much!

Sorry to hear that, too.
Was there any visible marking about the content?
There were no visible markings about the content.  I think the shape of the plastic case may have been what gave it away.

That's too bad, I'll keep an eye out for it.  How much are these going for nowadays? If it was sent Priority, I think it comes with $50 insurance automatically. Probably won't help much, but it's worth pursuing if you can.

It was sent first class mail. If anyone knows the approximate value that would be helpful.  A dealer I sold it to, was sending it back to me, to auction on Bitcointalk.

USPS sucks big time. Sorry about the loss and yes will keep my eye out.
You might also want to check ebay regularly or place an alert. Most likely they will sell there.
Did you use registered mail on this?

I will add an alert to ebay and I appreciate you offering to keep your eyes open about it too.  It was sent first class mail (not priority or registered).

Call your local postmaster. Complain. Every US piece of mail reported stolen will open an FBI investigation. Give them the information, they will pursue it. I've done this myself. I didn't get my coin back, but I think the shipper actually never sent it and so it was closed and nothing became of it. She was very helpful and encouraged me to keep doing that whenever I lose any USPS mail. (Other than International, which of course, they have no control over once it leaves usa customs).  Good luck - was it an international package at any point, btw?

It was first class mail going under a 50 miles.  I've put in a report with USPS with pictures of it already.  So maybe by some miracle it will turn up.  I do not expect it to come back though.

I watched news reports with mail items that were insured or had signature requirements, that were marked as delivered, but actually stolen by the post men that were delivering them.  Multiple surveillance videos showed this occurred at peoples houses, right at their front door.   This was the reason for first class mail, but apparently that is not safe either.

I'm not sure how much its worth, so I have no idea as to how much I lost.  Any estimates?

Thanks again,

SimplyRouge2

If you see it for sale anywhere, please report it to me via PM and by posting in this thread.
