We should add this "pyramid of quotes" to the "Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules"

Except they more often than not don't, as like the above said, people are too lazy. The whole message or multiple quotes are usually not needed, and you don't even need to quote the post above you most of the time or can cut chunks out, but people don't, so this is why the automatic collapsing is a good idea.
That's true. I guess we can't depend on others to do this.

Yup, and so the way bitcointa.lk handles quotes is pretty good, by automatically collapsing the quotes when they get too long.

I like the way bitcointa.lk handles them and they're collapsible / you have to 'click to expand'. I think something similar should be employed here.

I don't see a problem with the quoting system. If a quote gets too long, people will usually shorten it somewhere in the pyramid.

I think the quoting is fine as far as your are answering or just comment other person above you.

I strongly agree something should be done. Some are just plain lazy, it just take a few seconds to edit, to make the tread more readable. May be we can execute a "trimming script" after members click "post". It will detect quotes and remove quoted messages more than 3 or 4 layers deep.

that would be amazing. as much as it is sometimes useful to get more context, it would be so much better not to have the huge blocks of quotes. especially in threads that we already frequent.

i wonder if there are plans for something like this for the new forum.

It has been mentioned a couple of times in there somewhere, but no idea if it's going to be implemented. Doesn't seem like it would be too hard to include though.

No idea, though some have suggested using "spoiler tags" in the new forum software (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/spoiler-tags-583993) for hiding images and long paragraphs.

Spoiler tags should be included as well, but not for this. You want something that automatically hides or collapses quotes as people just wont do it otherwise.

I'm not fond of this way of this quoting pyramid either, I think they could be tabbed with each quote - it would be easier to read.
In that way it doesn't have to be limited, but it would be very easy to read along.

It would be great if some way was found by which quote pyramids could be prevented.

1- Stop images from being quoted , possibly replace them with *removed image*

2- Put a cap to amount of quotes in a single messages , possibly configurable by the viewing user.
This would only apply to nested quotes

EG :-

Quote
Quote
Quote
This
shouldn't
happen

If it was limited to two :-

Quote
Quote
shouldn't
happen

But , this would not be affected :-

Quote
This
Quote
Would
Quote
Still
Quote
Work

How does this idea sound , are there any obvious technical limitations and is this worthy enough to be a part of the update list for the New Forum Software ?
