UPDATE

It turns out that although cgminer 4.11 was working fine for 1.5 years, it suddenly stopped being able to talk to the Kano server, without warning or explanation.
Per Kano's suggestion I upgraded to 4.12 and now it works again, although initially in verbose mode it was spewing "above target" errors. After disabling verbose mode, it mines just fine.

Since you aren't mining at 1 diff on any pool, those messages will always show when you tell cgminer to show them ... in verbose mode.
They're the internal check of the diff of each nonce returned.
cgminer must check the difficulty of each nonce returned by the hardware and decide if the pool wants it.
e.g. when mining at 442 Diff, on average 441 of each 442 nonces returned will be "above target"
It's not an error.

You can buy a throwaway phone number from blacktel.io for just 10 EUR (in crypto of course). I personally use a UK and US number - those two countries don't require an ID. They even work on Apple's 2FA.
Hushed is another option for this BTW, but no crypto option. At least it's dirt cheap.

Yeah 'Highest' moderation set on a discord channel requires you to have a phone number to join, but I've never had that set.

No idea about the phone number thing though, they don't have my phone number and I run the discord channels for the pool.
Maybe that changed after I joined?

Yeah its a new thing (last 7 months), don't think it happens to everyone, and not sure if its a requirement for new signups.

Its a flag that can be set on the server as well, but discord mainly use it for account verification.

It can happen at any time apparently, I don't have it on mine but then I only use discord for three channels and don't game on it.

Oh, BTW, there is nothing sketchy about banning malicious sources of traffic.  If you think botnets don't originate from the U.S. you are just wrong.

Yes, I must admit, my personal website gets a ton of visits from hackers looking for wordpress vulns
originating from Digital Ocean, AWS, etc. But the worst offenders are overseas in my experience.

The main issue is that I need to know a username - but yes posting in the pool thread is the correct place if you wont join discord.

You can use discord from any browser on a PC or phone or tablet https://discord.com/

A) Kano pool is ran by Kano and NOT -ck who runs solo.ckpool!
Yes, in the beginning Kano and -ck worked together on cgminer and the ckpool code and then started & ran the now defunct ckpool but they parted company long long ago in 2014.

B) The Kano pool thread is disused because very few folks have issues that need to be reported there and most now use Disccord. If you repost there (pool thread) and you will get better response.

That said, have you changed the miner firmware being used? Most of the aftermarket firmwares violate the cgminer GPL so they are automatically banned from Kano's pool. The one exception is Braiins, they are allowed because it is clean code that is not based on cgminer. Considering that Kano is the 'other' main developer of cgminer he rightfully takes great umbrage towards those who refuse to publish their code modifications like the GPL requires them to to.

edit: BTW, KanoPool accepts connections from *anywhere* on the planet with no restrictions (aside from the 3rd party firmware thing).

Banning IP ranges from the USA is also sketchy. Maybe banning ranges from Nigeria, or Khazakstan, makes sense. But the USA??

Anyway, I was just speculating about the IP Ban.  I have no idea if that is the case, which is why you need  to ask Kano, not in random posts.

The Kano thread says :
"Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic. "

That's a generic forum message, has nothing to do with the Kano.is thread.  That is the proper placed to post for support, since you don't want to use Discord.

I don't want to use Discord either Smiley

Suddenly I found that cgminer could no longer log into Kano.is for pooled mining and
complained of an "authorisation" error.

First, Post in the Kano.is pool thread.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.8895603

Second, get on Kano's Discord Channel.

Third, Kano is very proactive on banning IP ranges that may be doing something malicious.  This is a good thing!  But of course legit users sometimes fall in that IP range.  So contact Kano, correctly, and he can whitelist your IP, if that is the issue.

The discord channel requires providing a phone number. That seems sketchy. I already get enough scam calls.

I was directed to use Kano.is because it was allegedly reliable and run by the same person
who runs ckpool.
I've been mining with Kano.is for a couple years with a small ASIC miner. Other people
are using smaller miners.
Suddenly I found that cgminer could no longer log into Kano.is for pooled mining and
complained of an "authorisation" error.
This is very odd, because the documentation says the "password" can be anything, so I just use "x".
Meanwhile, oodles of other people are continuing to mine on Kano.is...
Despite this problem, ckpool still works for solo mining although now I'm not sure I trust it.
Has anyone else experienced any problems with Kano.is?
FWIW I have tried other ports besides the usual 3333, and other Kano servers, but no luck.
