Got your point and I think you're right.

I think I saw several people asking why they are banned due to confusing locking message  that shows they are banned.
It is not hard to edit it and replace word 'banned' with better alternative, so I support LoyceV suggestion.
Yeah, I guess this is where the confusion came from.

how to save bitcointalk account without band ?
Maybe even this user.

I agreed with this suggestion because the message contains two information, locked and banned. Having a consistent message with Locked warning will be better. The shorter proposed message looks good.

The account is not banned.
My testbuddy was locked but according to BPIP is not banned.

Here is a guide how to lock your account where i used my alt. /jk

It has been disabled for many, many years IIRC, it was because of a vulnerability in SMF that allowed hackers to obtain a database dump with the unencrypted security questions.. So if these questions were left as they were, the hackers could have used them to attack accounts, so Theymos disabled the feature.

The Security Queston featute is still ON!
Only the help link is disabled.
I just tested with a fresh accound and got it locked when I tried to recover it!

First time i see the long red message in the second image, is it (relatively) new? I don't remember it exists before!
And wonder know why someone would proceed in "locking" his account after reading that warning message!!

That message ("you are banned from using this forum") should be edited out. It serves no purpose whatsoever other than confuse people. Imagine how many msgs the Meta sections would stop getting if that sentence didn't exist.

Suggested solution: omit the "you are banned" and write only this:
Quote
Sorry Guest, for security, your account has been locked. Email xx
This should be the message that pops up when no ban was enforced. @Theymos or whoever's in charge of changing forum features and messages should consider changing this.

Maybe its easier for unlocking an Account as it is banned and the recover team has not to deal with it as they normal doing for lost Accounts !
Perhaps it has also to do who locked the Account and why it was locked.
Dont know how it works and i can be wrong.

@LoyceV
But i agree that it would be more understandable for the effected User when the message describes it better !

Maybe " For security reason your Account is locked for using this Forum "

Well technically, the user is banned.

And I believe he or she is sharp enough to read and comprehend the line below it instead of having a heart attack at the "banned" word Cheesy

Typical ban messages wouldn't mention about security (reasons).

I agree and I think that locking an account the way it is actually done should be removed... (it is related to a hack done 5 years ago tho)

When an account is locked "for security", the message says the user is banned:
This is confusing and makes the user think he's banned (which means using another account would be ban evasion), which isn't the case.

Suggested solution: omit the "you are banned" and write only this:
Quote
