If changes are to come, they will for the new software, not for this version.
And I think the main concerns are security and usability, not cosmetics, but you can try to see if there is something about themes in duscussion in the new forum software sub-section

No. Increases chance of vulnerabilities for a cosmetic change. If you really want to change the way the forum feels, create a browser addon that changes the look and feel.

I would like to suggest a Theme change for the board, something a little more "Techy"
Something like this would be cool : http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2808
And maybe a change on the way Private Messages are displayed, instead all in one "page", separated by member
