Creators of a Bitcoin clone seem to be super focused on Bitcoin p2p feature. They think current projects by Core people aren't p2p enough, therefore not following Bitcoin Whitepaper. Some of those who disagree with the Bitcoin clone devs think Bitcoin should not necessarily be as Satoshi wrote on Bitcoin Whitepaper.  If you have gone through Bitcoin Whitepaper it won't be hard to understand what Satoshi wants for Bitcoin. I believe he want Bitcoin to be:
1.  Censorship resistance
2.  Decentralized
3.  Open/public Blockchain
4.  permisionless/trustless
5.  Private/Anonymous

If whatever crypto or sidechain you choose to create does not in anyway violate these principles then you'd never have to worry whether or not it is Peer-to-peer — as it'll naturally develop into p2p.

  Lightning Network is p2p?

To me Lightening Network is p2p because no one controls the Bitcoin except the sender & receiver. Some insist that hops on LN are third-party... can we also consider Miners on Bitcoin Blockchain as third-party? I even think LN is more Censorship resistant due to the fact that Bitcoin mining is unfortunately centralized. My only problem with LN is that subsequent transactions on a channel, between sender and receiver aren't recorded on the Blockchain. This effectively breaks rule number 3 above (transactions have to be public blockchain). I learned the exclusion was due to the slow nature of Blockchain. I wondered why not upload the transactions later or something (or try sth like this: Transactions ➡IPFS & later to ➡Blockchain).
Hopefully in the future devs will consider allowing all transactions to be added to the Blockchain without compromising speed. It's just too creepy not to record transactions on Bitcoin Blockchain.
