Depends how they set themselves up.
In GRC's case, my feeling is that allowing projects/companies to acquire computer power, could be achieved by giving them bulk buy of the coin, which would give them guaranteed, provable, compute resources.
Questions like these are exactly the kind of thing being asked within the GRC community right now. The technical parts, ie - having a working distributed computer system - are already in place and working. Ahead of the field.
Not to mention, if people understand/see the value in projects like this, you may find a pretty reasonable degree of altruistic investment. Some people do still actually like us their money to do good things. Not everyone is in this grubbing around trying to make as many fast bucks as possible. This is often more the case with richer philanthropic types. Which are exactly the kind of people you'd want involved. Just look at the Gates Foundation and Factom.
