Decentralised Autonomous Co-Operative (DACo-op)

Supp proposes a DACo-op which puts an even focus on the common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations of its community. Building on a rich heritage of welfare-enhancing co-ops, Supp will implement blockchain technology to build a global DACo-op for the hospitality industry. The DACo-op will be run by rules encoded in self-executing smart contracts designed to reflect the shared principles of the community. In matters which require human interface, such as arbitration, users will be rewarded for their participation. As Supp users physically interact off the platform, the model will achieve positive externalities aside from purely commerce. These will be social and cultural in nature.
 
The DACo-op model aims to overhaul the traditional gig economy model, where a worker’s wages are ultimately controlled by an entity which seeks to extract value for profit-seeking shareholders. When a gig economy participant’s situation deteriorates, switching platforms is not always a valid option, as platform reputation is siloed and the same network effects which make a platform valuable to users is what makes switching difficult (i.e. for a driver there is not much point in joining an Uber competitor if all the passengers are on Uber). To enable self-sovereign identity, people in the DACo-op will have portable profiles which includes both their data and reputation. Any surplus profits earned by the DACo-op will be distributed to frequent users.

Throughout my travels when I needed a little more income, I always felt uneasy on who I could trust when it came to hospitality work and if I was going to be treated fairly as a worker. Supp seems like the perfect solution to this. Excited for the future of the company!

When is the MVP supported by Android?

Late March at this stage, with potential to slip into April depending on how testing goes. Expecting a decent uptick in shift activity as we have a queue of Android users awaiting access. If you're a hirer this means more workers to pick from | If you're a worker this means more shift options Smiley

Any current or former hospitality workers can probably relate to the ancient staffing practices in this industry. For the rest of you here's a little context:

Most hospitality workers like chefs or baristas are familiar with the deed of back-filling a shift on behalf of a friend (this is such a common occurrence in Australia that it was coined a “rockstar shift” – they bump in and out for the show like Bon Scott on tour). A competent worker knows they can slot into any team for the day, and they are eager to work these shifts due to the flexible and optional terms. This informal practice has taken place for decades and is the go-to option for venues when their regular staff call in sick or schedule leave.  

Staffing is the Achilles heel of venues because this outdated process of back-filling a shift is unreliable, slow and often fruitless. Additionally, venues risk ending up on the wrong side of the regulator: these shifts are essentially “black market” because they are normally paid from cash out of the till’, a process where hirers avoid paying tax on earnings, and workers avoid paying income tax. The murky nature of these payments puts a business’ reputation on the line and risks a hefty fine. Workers are often coerced into accepting below minimum rates, and can feel like they have no rights when a situation turns bad, because they’ve been complicit in the black market.

Supp doesn’t propose a silver bullet for the industry’s problems, but suggests its community will address the power imbalance between workers and hirers; boost overall industry performance by minimising time wastage; set a new standard for community best practice by rewarding early adopters and frequent users; and launch a model that incentivizes good behavior and discourages bad behavior (prevent problems from happening rather than reacting to the symptoms of a bad system). Through Supp it will become the communities’ prerogative to collectively solve current and future problems. The uberisation of industries is changing the way people work. Supp proposes a welfare-enhancing model: the Decentralised Autonomous Co-Operative (DACo-op). In this model interests are aligned, and the community moves towards shared economic, social and cultural goals. This innovation is made possible by the Supp Blockchain Protocol.
 
The Supp Blockchain Protocol encompasses value distribution, user governance and digital currency payments, and will enable the community to rapidly scale into a robust and low cost global co-op. The Protocol will address the power imbalance between workers and hirers, and by mitigating black market shifts, it will provide transparency in payment rates and foster community pressure to fairly compensate staff. Frequent users of the platform will share in the value they help create, rather than it being extracted by a small group of investors.
 
Supp tokens can be earned by users in an incentive system which rewards positive participation, and discourages damaging behaviour. The utility of Supp tokens will evolve over time and initially be used to (a) decentralise platform governance, (b) incentivise positive participation, (c) reward early adopters via the Tip Jar, (d) lower platform costs, and (e) provide nomadic millennials or temporary foreign workers an optional medium of exchange for income remittance.
 
Today with Supp, if there is a gap in a venue’s staff roster, managers connect with peer-reviewed workers in real-time using a simple app. Casual staff, travellers and temporary foreign workers can easily get hospitality shifts to supplement their income. Secondary benefits we have observed are a boost to industry productivity by minimising time wastage, and better compliance with local workplace legislation. On Supp, wage rates are higher than usual, in part due to venues getting rewarded by the community for sharing their productivity savings with the worker, and having a high degree of comfort about the worker’s skill level thanks to the reputation system. The minimum viable product (MVP) was launched on iOS in 2017 to inner Melbourne hospitality leaders, and proof of concept was reached soon after.
