Property is terribly expensive, but a soda at a supermarket in Geneva is half the price it demands in the French Riviera.

Property is relatively expensive because the quality is one of the best. Switzerland is one of the least polluted regions in Europe. But if we compare the property prices to those in major cities such as London and Paris, the Swiss plots and apartments will seem to be reasonably priced. And regarding utility / commodity prices, they are lower as the EU taxes are not applicable.

Of course that Swiss are happy, there country had never been attacked in recent (1900+) history, they have great economy, they keep their natural environment very clean, and they got great food too (love chocolates).
On the bottom unsurprisingly are countries  that have been disturbed by countless conflicts, and/or despotic rules.

Completely Agree. One of the best place to visit and live. The most calm and beautiful country to live in and have never heard about the controversy related to Swiss at any stage of time. They believe in making their own high standards and simply love the climate of switzerland.

Your country may be your worst enemy
Please, stop that nonsense about that negative interest rate. Swiss banks still give positive interests to all their many customers' savings account.
Cost of living is high, but just like London and in the world's best places. Property is terribly expensive, but a soda at a supermarket in Geneva is half the price it demands in the French Riviera.

I`m not sure you are the happiest person in Switzerland if you hold like 40.000 CHF, in a savings account that you put away for your children's college or whatever.

You will soon find out that with a -0.75% interest rate, the central bank robs your wealth.
It's not like this isn't happening in other countries to. How about you stop saving money in banks?  There is no need to do that unless you don't know how to properly manage your money.
Besides, this is just a minor thing. Would you say that USA is the place to live because it has positive interest rates?
I think not.

it is important to note that, while Swiss taxes are low, people are being milked massively by:

a) fines for all sorts of rule violations; these rules are very detailed, permeate into every detail of personal life and are engineered and prosecuted on an industrial scale; they are nothing more than additional taxes

b) high rent and no way to escape - there are fewer owners and more tenants than in most other Western countries. A highly developed and complex methodology ensures that it is very difficult, if not impossible, even for highly trained and well paid workers to acquire property. The reason for this is that trillions of capital (from Swiss and foreign pension funds) is invested in rental real estate and the tenants are needed. This system is nothing short of slavery. A person who would pay CHF 500 in interest has to pay 2000 in rent. Pension funds are required by law to pay 1.75% interest - at the same time a property owner has made 12% yearly, over the last 10 years!

c) cost of living is higher than neighbouring countries, sometimes a little, sometimes 10 times. Example: meat, 3-4 times. Legal fees, up to 10 times. Detergent, 3 times. Parking a car publicly in the street: up to CHF 2000 per year; in France/Germany that is free.

Still standard of living is high, but only if you have enough money. For those with little or no income, it is a nightmare.

a) Not like cops wont fine me in my country and I pay 80% taxes, so that is bullshit, enjoy low taxes (while they last)

b) Yes there is, rent a bigger house and get together with your friends. It's hard for 1 guy to pay a rend for 1 room apartment but if you live more there then its easier

c) That is true, but you got the low taxes, and somewhat easier economic freedom.

Life in general in Switzerland is more better than other countries because of this :

# Low Crime
# Low Taxes and High Salary
# High-quality education, but low cost
# Beautiful mountains and landscape
# Great food

-0.75% Interest rate and your savings evaporate like the ice from your palms in a summer day.

Their monetary policy is a joke, it took them 2 years to unpeg themselves from the toilet paper EUR.

They voted down the gold referendum, and 2.5% reserve requirements really?

You will see hyper-inflation coming like an avalanche from those nice Alps  Cheesy

Also their bank secrecy laws are not what they were used to in the 1970. Switzerland is falling if those people dont do something about it.

It seems all governments are getting rid of the gold standard. (its stops them from printing unlimited amounts of paper money)

no wrong

Switzerland is the least unhappy country on Earth

just because most other places are worse doesn't make it Paradise

in Paradise there are no speed limits and no armies of useless pigs that have nothing to do all day but write fines for even the most ridiculous bullshit  Angry

HOWEVER compared to the USA, where cops tend to hurt or kill innocent people all the time, the finewriters are preferable...Swiss cops hardly shoot people because dead people cannot be milked; it is all about optimizing revenue. Taxes are low, so government has to find other ways of financing  Sad

If taxes are low the taxbase is bigger, because people have more freedom to grow more.

Only perversely sadistic governments keep 90% taxes to milk us like slaves, while not realizing that the GDP shrinks (because the govenrment owns 90% of it and they are the worst administrators ever).

Why have every reason to be. They have very high standards and the country is beautiful.
I'm especially fond with their privacy laws. https://protonmail.ch/ is based in Switzerland!

Yes but their bank secrecy laws crumble, Singapore has much better privacy laws at the moment.

The dirty hands of the European Maffia Union have reached the Swiss too.

Never met a single fascist anywhere in all my time in Switzerland. They are among the friendliest people on Earth. Some of them are against immigration, but that fight is lost since all borders are fully opened. Last time I've flown from Nice to Geneva, the only person who asked for my ID was an Easyjet attendant.

For some people everyone else is a fascist. I have been accused of being a fascist too. The reason was that I don't like my country from being swamped by illegal immigrants. Well qualified immigrants are OK. But I don't want welfare rats in their millions to come to my place.

I think I'll carry on living in a more miserable place. The Swiss I've interacted with all seemed to be closet fascists and more than slightly uptight but maybe I met the wrong ones.

I visited Switzerland several times and from this experience I can understand why they are the happiest country on Earth.
First, this is very organized state, with excellent legal protection for every citizen.
People really love their country and are proud of it.
Living standard of people is much higher than in neighboring countries.
In that country there were no wars and conflicts last 500 years.
People really enjoy their life without too much stress and problems.
Residents of these countries can directly decide on important political and social issues in the referendum.
In my humble opinion it's the most beautiful country in the world, with stunning natural beauty, ski resorts, forests ...

Yes, Switzerland is one of the best place in the world. I'm staying there several weeks each year, but I'm afraid it's getting worse and worse because of immigration. There are the ugly Russians who think they own the world because they're so bloody rich, the loud Arabs with their wives fully veiled, and the Romanians/Kosovars/Albanians, those people where the men are thieves (at best) and the women, prostitutes (at best).

None of these folks respect traditional, conservative, Swiss values.

There are growing immigration problems, and I guess it can only be solved by a more careful selection of who is allowed to get in, but Switzerland has lost all its rights there. Yes, the country isn't part of the EU, but it's part of the Schengen area, so all the boat people from Libya who have arrived in Italy can freely travel to Switzerland. They won't have the right to settle down, but I'm sure plenty will.

It surprises me that Switzerland risks from getting swamped by the immigrants, even when the fiercely anti-immigrant Swiss People's Party is the largest faction in the parliament. Perhaps the other coalition members (esp. the Social Democratic Party) are forcing them to accept migrants, as they don't have a majority on their own.

Being part of Schengen area means that they have some obligations that they must fulfil. Switzerland was hermetic society for many years so now it's difficult for them to adapt immigrants. Also the fact that EU doesn't have any sufficient regulations regarding immigrants from outside  Schengen borders doesn't help.

And it's only after they are old that they wished that they had more children... rather than simply all that practice.  Cheesy

That is right. Already more than 20% of the Swiss population is comprising of immigrants. And worse, most of them are from unproductive countries such as Turkey, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Albania.etc. In the future, this will put enormous strain on the Swiss resources, and might reduce the overall quality of living in Switzerland.

Of course they are happiest; they aren't in the EU  Wink

That is the main reason. Since they aren't in the EU, the taxes (both direct and the indirect ones) are much lower, and the people do have quite a bit of disposable income at their hand. The Swiss can happily enjoy their life, as the Germans and the French struggle to subsidize the Romanians and the Poles.

Why are you going off topic? This thread is about Switzerland not the other two follow-ups, even though I like Sweden and Norway.

The only country in the world that officially supports Direct Democracy a system that properly represents it's citizens is happy? Who would have thought it! There's also Finland lets not forget, they're a country that actually have the balls to introduce a tax on the church which meant that religious families prayed at home and had much more fun with their time on Sundays than when the church had that much power over them.

Have you noticed? There seems to be a connection to removing corrupt organisations from power and citizens being happy.
Actually there was a study that I've read about. 9 out of 10 people there didn't know who they president was. The people said that they didn't care because whoever was doing the job was doing it right.

It's interesting that Mexico is one place ahead of the US.
Yet, many Mexicans prefer to move to the US, while not too many Americans are moving to Mexico.

EDIT
The happiest countries in the world appear to be those who maintain a single culture where everyone can relate to each other.

People in Britain are less happy than those in Australia, New Zealand or the US, but more contented than their peers in Germany, France and Spain, the 2015 World Happiness Report has found.

According to the new study, which examined factors including economics, psychology, health and public policy in 158 countries, Switzerland is officially the happiest country on Earth, followed by Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Canada.

Britain lagged behind in 21st place, up one place from last year’s survey. New Zealand at No 9, Australia 10, the United States 15, Germany 26, France 29, and Spain at 36.

First published in 2012, the World Happiness Report is an initiative of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network, which ranks countries in terms of their population’s wellbeing and reflects the recent global interest in happiness as criteria for informing government policy.
