and as John said, dont expect huge returns from a single 6870
best of luck with it Smiley

Laugh if you want, but the only reason I'm doing this is to -possibly- get enough cash to buy Guild Wars 2.  I'm a 25 year old unemployed gamer who needs money for a game.  Yeah it's pathetic, but I'm currently attending school and getting free-living provided by my mother, which is also sad.  Either way, if this helps even put $20 in my pocket, I'd be fine with that.

Currently, all the information regarding the codes just confuses me.  Every program I use, all the documents I see, all these random letters and numbers that I'm supposed to save and store, but one of them identifies me and I need to save it yadda yadda.  Busting my brain here.

I hope you aren't planning on making your mother pay the electric bill for that unaware.

I'm not laughing, many people mine for many different reasons. Some people even still mine on cpus

maybe slow down a bit and ask some specific questions

no-one will just try to explain "everything" in one go Smiley

I need to go out for a couple of hours, but if you are still around click the "web irc" link on the site I linked before and I can try help explain some stuff Smiley

As a newbie I feel inclined to ask this.  Is all the information around BitCoins so convoluted in purpose?  People not wanting competition or something?  Or have people just not got around to making an epic guide?  I've read three guides so far, a PDF, Wiki page, and something here on the forum and I still feel barely closer than I was before I read it.
no
there is a huge amount of information available, more that your initial question wasn't really a question Smiley
there are a lot of guides, including a forum thread of guides. you are correct though, no-one has written the uberguide that covers everything

I wrote a guide to cgminer on win7 using a bat file

https://ozcoin.net/content/win7-cgminer-setup-guide
you can use it with any pool, just substitute pool and worker details where neccesary.

Please beware you will probably use more money on powering your computer, than you will earning bitcoins when mining Smiley

Away on an extended break
I read the whole intro PDF, Wiki page, and many topics in the forum so far.  I still feel a bit confused. Rather than bore you with questions, perhaps this will work?

Let me join your pool.  I have a decent computer (not sure how decent according to mining, never done it before) and will farm endlessly with you!  Teach me the ins and outs, and you will have a dedicated pooler for your... pool.

Specs:

Windows 7
Intel Core i7-950
6gb DDR3 1066
80GB Intel SSD (500GB backup, does it matter?)
Radeon 6870 1GB

I use Voip if that's an option to speed things up.  Skype, Mumble, Teamspeak, Ventrilo?

This young grasshopper is ready.
About the only spec important for mining is the graphics card. Your card will yield approximately 300~ MH/s, and you'll get approximately BTC0.15 per day.
Try taking a look at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=41.0 and pick one reasonably sized pool with low or no fees like EMC or OzCoin, and make an account there. Download a mining program, preferably CGMiner (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/official-cgminer-mining-software-thread-for-linuxwinosxmipsarmr-pi-4110-28402) and set it up to point to your pool. That's it.
