Prosecutors are expected to file charges against a man who was shot when he allegedly tried to rob an Independence homeowner in the middle of the night.
Police believe the man was breaking into a home in the 1300 block of South McHenry Street. This occurred about 4 a.m. Wednesday, and the shooting has rattled nerves in the neighborhood.
Independence police say a homeowner woke up and discovered a man had broken into his house.
The homeowner grabbed his gun and fired several shots. The suspect ran out of the house wounded.
A neighbor across the street saw the suspect struggling to get away and gave the man a ride to the hospital.
The suspect was treated at an area hospital. He is expected to survive.
The homeowner was not hurt. He declined comment Wednesday.
Ryan Evans said the suspect was a friend of a man living with Evans.
"I just heard a lot of commotion - screaming and yelling," Evans said. "I had a pool of blood on my porch so I knew they weren't in my house."
Evans believes the suspect was trying to get help from the man living with him after he was shot.
"It brings it home," he said. "It kind of makes you analyze who you are hanging out with."
