After digging through some js, I found where they got the design from: http://www.bitwize.com.lb

Well, I assume whoever scammers probably stole the design from them, since Bitwize seems to be a legitimate Lebanese firm.

I haven't found the exact design yet, but I'm sure it's out there because there is no way a scammer would pay for this. Also, I searched through Bitwize's social media accounts, but couldn't find any explicit connection to Bitcoin, so I'm just going to assume whoever is behind Cryoniks started googling phrases that started with "bit", came across this website, and decided to steal a design.
When they responded to an email I sent, I used 4 different websites to trace the email using the header. 2 websites said it originated from utah, the other 2 said it originated from Lebanon. Coincidence?

I emailed 'Bitwize' when Cryoniks was first being touted, prior to Arts Technica or Tech Crunch giving the owner a huge free PR boost interviewing him.

Bitwize wanted to know who I was before directing my email to 'management'.

Bitwize pulled a huge 'cry' scam on Kickstarter the year before for a security code USB thumb vault.

Took a couple of hundred grand an produced nothing, pissed off a lot of people. Bitwize, Cryptek and Cryoniks are one and the same, they are meant to be based in Lebanon.

What bothers me about this whole thing is that the technology the site is advertising is actually well within the realm of possibility.

Now, don't get me wrong, this is totally a scam.  However, as someone who works with HTSCs (high temp superconductors) and home LN2 production in his spare time, I find it disconcerting that everyone is so skeptical about the tech.

STI has been making devices that utilize superconducting chips for years now.  They have an integrated pulse-tube sterling cryocooler inside the devices to get the chip down to the requisite <80K.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/850SLB6F1R-SUPERCONDUCTOR-TECHNOLOGIES-CRYOCOOLER-SUPERLINK-RX-850MHZ-/390609335037?pt=Other_Telecom_Equipment&hash=item5af22172fd

Heck, Ben Krasnow has been using the cryocoolers from these exact devices to make LN2 for years: http://benkrasnow.blogspot.com/2008/08/diy-liquid-nitrogen-generator.html

Summary: heck of a well researched scam.

Remember the huge computer room of the 1960's and how it's the size of my iPhone now?  I honestly believe such things are possible.  Capitalism creates these innovations.  It sounds like science fiction now, but imagine if you told the geeks of the 60's that you can build that same computer to be the size if your wallet? They'd laugh at you call it a scam. I'd really like to see a video from these guys explaining a bit more and letting their customers know who they are.

The size just determines the rate at which you can produce the LN2.  There are plenty that fit in a small shed.

I have found a picture of the Cryoniks device before they put it thru their disgronifier and shrank it down to desktop size:

This is pretty much what you need in order to harvest nitrogen from the atmosphere, and that's just the compressor side.  You still need a big vertical column for separating the different components.

Just for fun I tried to search for their patents for this sweet cooling tech and their  strip LED lighting from the future....

Take a guess what I found?   Zilch  Lips sealed

Then you did not search very well.... there IS cooling tech available to cool without Peltier or compressor. (start with :Stirling cryocoolers )
A Japanese company has a system where you have a sealed canister and stir a liquid and it does indeed produce significant cooling at one end of the device.

The reason I know this was I was asked to 'design' a wine cooler/ Refrigerator that did not use any of the conventional methods.
Problem was the licensing fee was massive and you could only buy units from the jap. company.

So I would not discount the cooling tech.. however even with the cooling tech, there does not seem enough room in the case for the number of chips needed.

My meaning was this company has no patents of any kind on file under the owner or the company by name

Being a bit of a self proclaimed expert on Stirling engines this offering while pretty is clearly a scam.

You might be able to design a stirling engine to act as a heat pump, but it has moving parts that require regular service and lubrication. It's a single piston system. Thus it creates noise and constant vibrations that you would never want attached or even in the same mounting plate as electronic equipment. It would literally shake anything apart given enough time and the vibration would cause noise.

It seems like Ed Trice is all over this too with previous scammery involving these nitrogen cooling units but I havn't found any solid linkage there

Hate to over simplify, but that was my absolute first thought when seeing the scam site's name.

Seems like has to be but I have not seen anything directly tying the two. If they are in cahoots they are certainly keeping that part quiet

Well, more digging-

The CEO is involved with another business called Crypteks

Also another thing called Cryptrade  http://www.cryptrade.com/#/home

Notice on the Crypteks Facebook, a like for Bitwize  https://www.facebook.com/crypteks, and Bitwize linkage on the Cryptrade home page with a very similar template used by Cryoniks

Kickstarter that has people questioning them as fraudulent with refund run-arounds   http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/crypteks/crypteks-usbtm-encrypted-and-lockable-usb-solution/comments, speculation that the business is actually run from Lebanon

Reddit has plenty to say on this

Particularly-

Quote
As horrible as it is for the backers, it's a sad fact that not every company will be able to make it. What's "dark" and terrible about this company is that they chose to neither communicate properly to their backers, nor were competent enough to give refunds.
I've been checking out kickstarter for a while. They do their best to see real material and such before approving projects for their site. While, yes, try do make money regardless of whether the project delivers or not, they DO actively block people to abuse their platform. I mean, they require something real and tangible for most projects. Software is the only real exception there, and perhaps a few games. I think they do a good job policing projects before they get approved. And, if the projects take your money and run, it doesn't look good for them, either.
And, like they've said, and numerous others have said, this is product investment by crowd. It's a risk. You're not pre-ordering or buying a product, you're giving them funding. If thing go the way they're supposed to, you get something back. And, if not, you get a refund. If you don't, some time of legal recourse should be appropriate, or just calling your credit card company and nixing the charge. The only time it's not really a risk is if it's a successful person or company that's finished one project, delivered, and then put another up.
Those guys should be ashamed of themselves for not communicating properly. If they need more time because of delays, say so. If you completely failed, detail why. Crowd-funding isn't just about getting money. It's about small companies and groups learning how to put out products without having massive debts or big name investors reaching down their backs. Some people wouldn't be able to deliver something at all if it wasn't for this model. Sharing your mistakes is more important that sharing your successes. It helps show the way for others. It's not just crowd-funding, it's crowd-learning about entrepreneurship.

Obvious scam is obvious. Don't preorder these.

May I see your evidence of a scam? Hopefully you're not actually trying to claim that concept art is a scam. I think what you meant to say was, "This might be a scam". Because if something is obviously a scam, than you would have some evidence to back up your claims.

Interestingly enough, these links that were posted that some of you are believing to be credible are claiming ButterflyLabs is legit as so many people on here are misusing the word "scam" toward them as well.

This company that has not proven their device exists in the slightest but are happy to take your money anyway. This is just a fancy website, with a nice graphic, and techno-wizardry sounding PR release (as a technical person can tell you is mostly all a bunch of Gee-whiz! sounding bullshit more at home on an episode of Star Trek), and nothing more.

BFL has shipped some stuff but their business practices are also shady as hell.

The website in question is only a scam when they don't deliver. The problem is, their claims are against the laws of phyics, so you call them liars, and if they're accepting funds in exchange for it, you can safely assume they are defacto scammers until proven otherwise.

That said, there is absolutely no chance of getting users of this forum to learn English and use the words "cheat", "lie", "steal", "deceive", "fail" or "mislead". They just love making up definitions so much and bundling them all into words that don't fit so that it gives a better impact for their libel campaigns. Oh the joys of anonymity.

Also, the website lists certain trademarks. A search of the USPTO.gov database returns NO results for Cryoniks or Frostbit. They are illegally using the TM designation after their good designations.

It isn't illegal to use them I think, it just means wherever they appear on their logos and such have zero merit.

Correct. Poor word choice on my part.

TM is just trademark, and it requires no registration. ® requires registration and is illegal to claim unless registered.

Also, if you look through their privacy policy, you'll find a link to a user agreement, which lists the following contact info:

Cryoniks, Inc.
40900 Woodward, Ste. 275
Bloomfield Hills, MI  48304
Attn: Safford & Baker, PLLC

Which confirms the LARA registration and actually seems to be a real law firm: http://www.saffordbaker.com/

Man, they have a lot of imagination.

We mainly insist that FrostBit™ Cryonic Bitmining units be installed on level ground in a well-ventilated and dust-free room. During the first 24 hours, Nitrogen gas from the environment will be collected and stored within leaving a slightly Oxygen rich environment. NEVER run your FrostBit™ Cryonic Bitmining units running near an open flame.

For giggles I called their customer support number and you get a message saying "Telephone number 248-283-8835 can't take your call right now, please leave a message".  A landline in Detroit.  And if you want to pay for one of these fabulously fake machines, you have to send a wire transfer.

Well, trying to look on the bright side, you know Bitcoin is starting to gain mainstream traction when people start spending this much time and effort into concocting a scam.

I wonder if this device will run "Battlefield 4" when it ships later in 2013.
