A great price per performance are the 6950's that can be unlocked to 6970's.

The following card can be unlocked:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127555&cm_re=6950-_-14-127-555-_-Product

You can unlock it by following these directions:

http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/159

These can do over 400Mhash/s per card for under $250 after the mail in rebate.

I like what your proposing. I've been looking into it now for a couple hours. It really does seem to make sense. Put my shopping list together....

It's worth watching Craigslist for these. I've built a small cluster from second-hand (one owner) XFX 5870s. At least for the XFX brand the second owner also assumes the lifetime warranty. Considerable savings.

Yes, that's correct, local hardware store... Currently 5830's are $130, 5850's are $210. (CAD)
Usually for one weekend a month they have them on sale for $100 and $190 respectivly.

5830 have a higher power consumption than 5850,

I don't like them much except for scavenging their cooler to put on 5850 Wink
