I heard that cold wallets can be hacked. But never expected BTER to be hacked, specially because they are expected to keep it much much much more secure.
You heard wrong ...

Yes, it is almost impossible to hack a cold wallet because :

- it is offline
- you don't know which wallet they have used,
- again , it is "offline".

If they had a malware/virus on their offline pc, in this case it was possible to "hack" the cold wallet.  However bter has opened.

Yes. it was definitely "cold" wallet or what was supposed to be one.
We do not know it is a theft by the owners themselves or some "inside job" (e.g theft with help of one of employees) or just weak dumb security like placing all "cold" coins in just one wallet and running it on regular internet connected computer with only difference compared to "hot" wallet was about it was NOT connected to web site and transactions made by hands not by scripts, which made hack possible.

How can a block explorer tell you, that it was a cold wallet?
It can't tell us whether it was connected to the internet or not (whether it was really 'cold'). But it's easy to see, that before Feb 14th the last outgoing transaction from the wallet happened on Feb 2nd. In January there were 7 days when they had outgoing transactions from the wallet. It must be a cold wallet. Users withdraw bitcoins from an exchange much more often. Also it's easy find their hot wallet, this is one of their hot wallet main addresses: 17o5zDFGNvP5H2iWd7aWbhacwS1HKDE4i9 and see many more outgoing transactions.

but not a good move on their behalf saying it was stolen from cold wallet
A short exercice with a block explorer reveals that the wallet indeed was used as a cold wallet. Anybody can see that.

Most probably was the exchange stealing the coins but not a good move on their behalf saying it was stolen from cold wallet.
My best guess is that this was an inside job.
Good lesson to learn here, don't leave your coins on the exchange.

I asked BTER to provide proof they went to the police to file a complaint but my mails went unanswered, I suggest we all send them tweets (https://twitter.com/btercom) or write them e-mails to provide such information ([email protected]).

Suspecting fool play as it was an alleged "cold wallet hack". Wouldn't be the first exchange to do so...

How the fuck can you lose 7000 bitcoins from a cold storage, and why on earth would you keep all the funds in 1 wallet ? who taught them to do security ?

You can't. Which is why everything points it to be an inside job.

The person who transfers coins between hot and cold storage could've had a trojan on his computer? This would explain why after the normal 100 BTC transfers the actual theft happened.
What a smart insider would do? He would steal privkeys, import them to his wallet, then wait for a withdrawal from the cold wallet, immediately after that he would empty their cold wallet to make it look like they got a trojan on their cold wallet system, which wasn't truly cold if that happened.

We can't be sure what exactly happened. It looks like it was a trojan, but insider theft would probably look exctly the same.

it is not recommended to keep large amounts of coin on an exchange due to the risk of exchange failure, hacking etc. I personally leave only 10% of my "Bank"

Yes its true starting from mtgox . And why you so serious about GAW. The major lose was with gaw. Because of their fucking 20$ promise. And i am not here to collect any charity so who cares anyone believes or not and the people wholost money in all these definitely know what i am feeling :-)

gaw was pretty obvious from the start.  a fool and his bitcoin are easily parted.

The 20$ promise must have made them millions and acsonline is only one of thousands of others who were ripped off. A large percentage of bitcointalk members must have been ripped off by them.

Start an exchange -> get lots of customer deposit -> claim to be hacked -> profit

Bitcoin lost is not in any protection of law, only fiat money, if they could just return the fiat money to users, they will get away leagally

Would be a real embarrassment and a lot of trouble for them if someone wins that 720 BTC bounty and the thief turns out to be BTER themselves.

At that point they would chose to end it , and resort to stealing.

wow 7k hacked that is pretty insane im guessing this is why the market dropped so hard today, people expecting dumps.

The various exchanges should start to use the multi-Sig function, an example of wallet that is using multiSing : GreenAddress ( this is their official thread here in the forum : https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/greenaddress-open-source-multisig-wallet-service-521988).

I'm very impressive that a lot of exchanges are not using it.

Will they be refunding all the stolen bitcoins or will declare bankcruptcy ?

Well, it's nearly 2 million USD that are "supposedly" stolen here.

Last time I checked, they were running 400 BTC daily volumes and had, if my memory serves, 0.5% trading fee
==> 2 BTC/day of turnover on their end to which you have to remove employee salaries, server costs, taxes etc...

Assuming generously that they have a 1 BTC/day net profit, this means 365 BTC per year, at current prices this is not even 100k USD.

Therefore, they will never refund the bitcoins they stole for themselves.

by your statement
it is impossible for them back to bussiness

That's insane.. 7k BTC.. They are out of business for sure and it's probably an inside job. As long as bitcoin will be full of scammers and thieves it will be impossible for it to go mainstream.. BTC need some regulation..

At least we know that the alts are in place therefore we should at least get those back.  Angry

That's not guaranteed.  It didn't happen with Mintpal - some people got their other coins back but many didn't.  For all we know the thieves may have access to other hot or "cold" wallets and just may be shifting the bitcoins first.  Or the people at BTER may be desperately selling what they have left in other wallets so they can get away with some money and start again (assuming it wasn't an inside job anyway).  Would be interesting to know how long they knew something was wrong.

Makes you start thinking these hacks are staged if multisig is so easy to implement.  Roll Eyes

I think it will be impossible to "send" coin from a multiSig bitcoin address, if you don't know at least 2 of the 3 private keys. If they will use the multiSig  (for their cold/hot wallet) I think this type of situation could be avoided.
