There was a pizzeria I frequented as a youth, wheras the slices of pizza pie were around $0.50 a slice.
You could grab 2 slices and a glass bottle coke, for around $1.50.

Besides candy for a cent up to a nickle each, I remember purchasing 6.5 bottles of Coca-Cola for a nickle (U$0.05) directly from one of these located in front of the store unattended, albeit locked at night ...

I would ride my grandfather's circa 1960 black Sears bicycle 2 1/2 miles (5 miles round trip) down a gravel road on a hot August afternoon so to purchase one bottle with my only nickle at the small grocery store located in Kniman, Indiana. On the way home, I would ditch the bike and sneak into a cornfield so to ... wait, that wasn't till many years later when I reached puberty.

When I was in High School, I remember eating Chicken Doner for 2 Turkish Liras(approx. 0.35 euro, 0.50 US dollar). That is what I paid for it.

Well if it was recent, I purchased recently 1 kilo of Sweet Potato for 6 Qatari Riyals per kilo. I guess that's cheap. But during my childhood days, I purchase 1 bun, 1 rice soup for just 25 cents (peso). That's really cheap. Smiley

I have seen rice and potatoes go for like 0.20$ a pound, that’s pretty cheap (at least here in the US).
It seemed to me that a few dozen years ago the cheapest products were in the Soviet Union in comparison with prices all over the world.
Yea, the dirt they were eating was soooo cheap.

On a more serious note, however, since they had so little they can’t afford to pay much of anything for food. The prices really weren't “cheap.” For example: if monthly wages were 0.10$ and it costs 0.80$ to feed a family for a month then, in a sense, food is really expensive.

Cheap food usually tastes garbage. But what I really liked and it cost me nearly nothing was a puff pastry roll that I paid $0,18 for.

Well it looks costly to me as i eat my lunch within 0.15$.well this figure might seem astonishing, well i can tell you one thing that what i ate in lunch with that amount is even astonishing,as i ate rice, dal and one curry. It is enough for one person diet and i guess it will be enough for you also.
If you don't mind me asking, what country are you from? Here in the US we could never eat a meal for 0.15$ (in fact rarely does one eat from less than 5$ a meal here).

The cheapest food that I know of, that is actually not completely junk, is spaghetti. I make the sauce myself, which makes it extremely cheap (tomato sauce + olive oil + some herbs) and the spaghetti themselves are cheap as well. Don't know the exact price, but it's hard to undercut.

You're a dog! Now I want spaghetti for dinner. I'm sure that the price I'll pay for all the ingredients needed will surpass yours. I'm now going to Walmart and will pay for the items separately. I'm sure it'll be over U$15.00, of which I'll take a pic of the receipt and post it here in about an hour. The only items I have on hand are salt, pepper, onions, oregano, and basil. I may or may not purchase grated Parmesan cheese.

Haha, I'm glad I did and I'm sure you will enjoy! You can definitely make spaghetti both ways, ultra-cheap and high-class. Sounds great, I'm looking forward to the pics. Btw, did you know that (natural) tomato sauce is healthier than fresh tomatos? Anyways, enjoy! Smiley

US28.01 was the total. Incorporated is Hunts tomato sauce of various flavors and one real tomato. Yes, even a pear. It's slow cooking on high in a crock pot. Will be ready in about four hours. Yummy!

I did purchase Parmesan cheese, but forgot to restock on bay leaves. I bought lean hamburger. The whole mushrooms go in later.

Before heading to the store, I informed an elderly man neighbor what to expect for dinner tonight. When I returned, he passed me some petite sweet orange peppers to augment the sole large yellow pepper I purchased, thinkin' that'll be enough.

Be careful with cheap food, it might be GMO or unnatural on some other way. Health does not have price.
The only way to be sure that the food is organic is to grow it yourself Wink

I bought good French chocolate ( 100.g./0.22 Lb ) for 0.24 USD/pc in supermarket and bananas for 0.06 USD/lb in fruit market some years ago. When I bought bananas, saleswoman sale only 4 Lb, because she left 4 Lb for herself. It is not so easy to find something so cheap.
