The famous US based restaurant Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc., often known simply as Chipotle, is an American chain of fast casual restaurant's specializing in tacos and Mission burritos have announced free Bitcoin giveaway on April's fool day for everyone. No they are not accepting btc as payment instead, Chipotle is giving away $100,000 worth of bitcoin on Thursday to celebrate National Burrito Day.

This was the statement by the Chipotle:
Quote
To win, Chipotle (CMG) fans can visit the website BurritosOrBitcoin.com launching Thursday to try to guess a valid six-digit code. Each player gets 10 tries during the contest, which runs from noon to 9 pm ET. Correct guesses could win up to $25,000 in bitcoin ... or a free burrito, as Chipotle is also giving away $100,000 in food.

There will be total, 53 people could actually win the bitcoin: 50 fans will win $500 in the cryptocurrency, and 3 will win $25,000. And 10,000 fans will win one burrito.Actually they have partnered with the famous programmer Stefan Thomas who lost his Bitcoins worth $220 million recently due to lost of hard drive password and he is left with only 3 attempts provided by the wallet to get ownership of his funds back. This was interesting move on his part as he is trying new ways to get his coins back once again.

The Company claimed that although the offer is made on April fools day but it's not a prank on customer and they are giving such prizes to the winners and free burrito to customers. It is first time a restaurant is involved in crypto giveaway of such amounts and it is showing another positive signs for Bitcoins growth.

This burrito chain Chipotle has over 2,600 locations, including 76 restaurants in New Jersey. They decided to celebrate National Burrito Day in a really unusual way) Every year this day is celebrated on the first Thursday of April. This year it coincided with the Fool's Day)) May be that's why lots of people decided it was a joke)) But it was really a cool step. They sure us that it is the first U.S. restaurant to hold a cryptocurrency Giveaway. It is very likely to be true.

I got a 403 error when visiting the website so couldn't give this a try. Anyone else know? Or is this because of a location/geo restriction only for USA citizens?
Same here, when I open the site I get the same 403... And I'm thinking they only allow USA IP. and that's a wise move, they want to do marketing and give away money to other countries people is like wasting that marketing budget.

Always wondered how chipotle tastes like, see it on meme sites all the time (along with other US brands I never seen or tasted). Big news for Bitcoin as we go above 60k!
Chipotle tastes sweet and spicy, I would say the sweet part is what makes it different than another chili. There is a Mexican recipe called 'Albondigas', and they use chipotle for it, if you ever have the chance, try it because it tastes awesome.

Fair enough, I thought so too. And thanks for telling me about them. It's very strange for us in Asia to read about chilis being something different in another country. For us it means something very hot (not just spicy like pepper but hot like chili pepper). We have pizzas and tortillas and other things but I'm sure they taste very different in south and north America (sorry if I get it wrong).

I read through their twitter, and the online event was a bit of a downer, with gazilions of reports stating that the site was down, buggy, displayed errors, did not give then the 10 chances, and so forth.

I haven't managed to see how many users actually managed to get away with one of the bitcoin prices, which would be interesting to know. Given that the site had so many issues, I figure that way less than could have been given out were the experience to have been smooth (besides the odds being very low per se).
They did not expect all that traffic and I believe the marketing guys at Chipotle do not know much about the huge bitcoin network effect that these kind of activities would generate. If they are to do something else in the future they should plan it better than that as it was a complete disaster!

I am not sure how such things would help in mass adoption but yes, it is a cleaver way to promote your own business! And I see they have succeeded doing that! Crypto mags are all over talking about this increasing the companies brand equity in the online market and online population. So Chipotle is enjoying their marketing campaign and success. Mass adoption might not be underway due to this but it will just push the name "Bitcoin" to some more people and that's it along with the name "Chipotle" and I believe that's the end goal of such campaign! Smiley

What I mean is that this news is one more that helps mass adoption, not that Chipotle with this is the key factor. This giveaway, the recent news from Visa and Mastercard, Tesla, etc. The news we see lately almost daily what they do is normalize Bitcoin which until not too long ago was associated only with buying drugs over the deep web to fraud, ponzi scheme, etc. With this giveaway and the other things that are happening, Bitcoin is becoming a normal part of our society, present in our daily lives.

Actually, it wasn't a joke lol.

One of the articles emphasized precisely that:

No Joke: Chipotle to Give Away $200K in Free Burritos and Bitcoin on April 1

This type of news is important for mass adoption.

I think it was only meant to be happen yesterday since the site was giving me a 403 error or I am missing something that it was only for American residents. I use to stumble upon a post in a telegram group about changing their status to #bitcoin but I didn't know that they are hosting a contest. Well, it's a good exposure for bitcoin and the whole crypto space.

Put in my 10 entries.  Didn't win anything.  I assume that the "game" is all just a show. With a 6 digit code, there are only 1 million possibilities.  Since each player gets 10 guesses, all million possible codes would be guessed long before every player had a chance to try.  Therefore, I assume this is being run like sweepstakes, where a winner is chosen at random, and the actual code you enter doesn't really matter. That way multiple people can all enter the same code, and they can still limit it to just one winner.

Some quick stats:

  • Instagram: 1.1m followers
  • Facebook: 3.3m followers
  • Twitter: 1m followers

While I'm pretty certain that a good chunk of those followers are bots(as with any other big business), that's some pretty good exposure for Bitcoin lol. (Plus articles being written about it on multiple "news" sites.)

I googled that just in case, you never know in fool's day.

You've put a quote but not any links, here are some.

https://www.al.com/news/2021/04/chipotle-giving-away-100000-in-free-burritos-and-100000-in-bitcoin-today.html

https://www.coindesk.com/no-joke-chipotle-to-give-away-200k-in-free-burritos-and-bitcoin-on-april-1

https://news.bitcoin.com/free-bitcoin-chipotle-giving-away-100k-in-btc-national-burrito-day/

It either is true or they have agreed to play the joke (or they have believed it). I'll wait til tomorrow just in case.
