Nepotism kill meritocracy,
It kills and discourages healthy competition,
It brings disrepute to any system.
Politicians have found a loophole to discourage Nigerians especially when it comes to job seeking, most Nigerians find it difficult to apply for federal jobs because it is believed that it is reserved for person with upper hand, and in most cases that's what happens.
The truth is that, there is nepotism in every part of world, but just that, the one practice in Nigeria has a higher voltage. Which is why most of time you don't have competent people manning strategic positions in the country because they got it outside of merit.

Not necessarily Politicians also private sector are involved ranging from hotels to those jobs you consider Upper-class. It's degenerating the  value of school system, as majority now has the mindset that their job seeking now involves -who know who-. The truth remains that everyone is looking for who is loyal of which they can gain from and can represent them after they leave such position (planting someone who will he giving returns).

The  sole reason we have mediocre managing various sector which have lead to low productivity. Also Tribalism is one major problem in Nigeria which is eating deeper than we expect.

I doubt you to say Nigeria rate is more or higher, we can really determine because we can use same situation in Nigeria and compare with others. America  currently is suffering because of this as rate of unemployment keep increasing,  whites lacking job, racism influencing the game. So we only emphasise and not exaggerate it.

Manly looking at it you will know and see that nepotism is corruption, corruption can never sieze in this country,a situation where the people who are graduate and people that has skill are searching for jobs why the person who don't have certificate enjoy more than the one that went to school, this is nepotism, and when nepotism happens many people will be scared to say the truth, truth becomes bitter ,one can no longer say the truth again , because the truth becomes bitter in people's eyes , nepotism happens in many county, that's why the poor getting poorer then the rich gets richer ,is as a result of Nepotism.

A man in power can employe people who can't even handle a project, why the actual people who can handle those projects are not given the chance to work
They increased the numbers of employees instead of to the numbers to reduce they still increase it ,the person you employed can't do the work why employing him ,why not employ who is a professional in that field to do his work perfectly this is the most reason I love Chinese, Chinese can only employ u if you can deliver on what you know of
They hate nepotism to the highest order, Chinese don't too much reliable on certificate but skill ,if they check you and you pas their test you have started working, but here man know man has always be the problem

This thing dey for every system in naija at every level, man no man the easiest way to get lots of benefits.  It is very common with job employment,  graduates with good grade won't be given a job that they are qualified for instead the orga at the top will prefer to give someone that is not even qualify for the job just because the person is his relative or friend. The level at which nepotism had gotten in this country I don't know if can be easily put to a stop.

This nepotism dey everywhere no be only employment sector even for our everyday life we dey experience am like favouring one person pass the other person. Wetin make you think say the governors for our state dey related and if you never observe am I done observe this act for my state and several States.
Now the government position don turn to family affair because of nepotism, even for oil companies na still the same and other department wey dey face this challenge, sometimes money can speak if you no know the person, you fit use money buy power or slot for your child and nothing go happen, why do you think Doctors and nurses are not perfect nowadays, just because the course na professional course the parent can decide to buy slot for the child meanwhile the child is not even interested and after everything the child will graduate and fail to practice the course, this nepotism dey really affect the growth of the country and even for government sector, that's why our government don't even know how to handle their jobs. The only thing wey fit stop this act na to develop love among each other irrespective of tribe, sex, religion etc.

You make absolute sense here you see this Nepotism e don chop Nigeria very deep I no sure say we fit solve this one today e go take very good leadership in many sectors starting from the no1 citizen that’s the president to least political position.
Nigeria is a corrupt country and Nepotism is one of the generals of corruption it cannot be stopped until corruption flees from Nigeria which is close to impossible due to our stand the global political chain but this is something that is eating us like a cancer from the inside out and needs to be stopped,
We have so many misplaced potential in the wrong sector due to this we’ve got so many under qualified individuals filling very important positions in government and other fields they’ve turned the industry’s into hereditary takeover.

It may not be so easy to avoid this nepotism of a stuff, sometimes it's just getting in a tight corner can't see your relative who is qualified and in need of that opportunity then you forfeit his application, if it where you what would be your decision, you consider your relationship with the person, everyone loves seeing people around them progress.
In a case of the person being crippled in his performance then it becomes a different case aside then will term it nepotism.

Very valid argument, nepotism even in it's littlest form has a lot of disadvantages just like you pointed out however one can't just be critical of it

In the minds of the average man, when nepotism favours you it's "divine connection" and when it doesn't it becomes "corruption",and for the political elites, you wouldn't necessarily expect them to do otherwise since many alliances and cooperations are formed on this basis, even the country itself can be argued to have been gotten/formed as a result of nepotism directly or indirectly

Nepotism however harmful is a core and entrenched part of society one which can't be easily eliminated especially through criticism since every class of society in one form or another benefits from it and surely won't want to see it gone

Who is to blame then for the adverse effects of nepotism, the government, institutions, the people or society at large?

Omor this one wey u dey yan now na true ooo but if you look the other wey round e dey somehow because even you wey dey talk u fit enter power tomorrow start to dey do same thing because u no go dey power come dey watch your brother or sister dey suffer remember blood thick pass water. My opinion be say since dey no fit overlook their relatives,  make them try equalize am, that is to say that if they employ their relative them also employ outsider wey good and this outsider wey good fit impart some things to that unskilled person wey dey employ with so doing I believe say e go, go well somehow.

Nepotism Na simply when men wey dey in power or position favour their people over the general interest of Nigerians, Nepotism Na weitin we dey call MAN KNOW MAN, like we all know say this country even as work no dey e get people wey dey get work steady, most of them self even when them still dey University them done secure work for them bcos there person dey in power or authority,
Nepotism fit cause plenty damages for the work force of any country, because the  employment Na by who you Sabi and no be by waiting you fit do, most times the relatives wey dem give the job no know anything concerning the work but because they just want am to chop money them employ am,

Some of the effects of NEPOTISM they down
1. E dey reduce the work performance with unqualified employees wey no get that job experience at all.
2. E dey make the country relatively unproductive in some areas for the economy
3. E dey make people wey actually know the work well not to get job, so e dey lead to unemployment most times.

Nepotism no suppose dey any country, bcos some jobs need required skills and specialties no be by man know man,

Great topic OP,as this matter dey very rampant for our Africa countries, nigeria inclusive.and na one area wey no go fit go way unfurnately, but as oyibo man go talk, there are always two side to a coin.e get pros and cons. And at some point of our life we don benefit from this form of favour before. E get popular saying wey say "person wey him brother dey heaven no dey go hell fire."so there would always be this firm of favour in the society, but it should not come at the detriment of competence,If am in a position and I have a brother who is qualified to carry out a task,I will employ him if it is not against the ethic of the company provided he can deliver on that job.the highest hight of Nepotism is mostly found in public parastatals, the private sector rare have such.An incident happened years ago in shell,a senior shell staff who is a residing pastor of a church branch offerd one of his church member job in shell, after some time that shell staff moved to NLNG in Bonny as a supervisor, and something happened in shell in porthacourt involving that guy he gave employment,na so investigation started, and they later found out that the guy he employed, thou have all the qualifications, but did not pass true due process of employment, that cost this supervisor his job in Bonny(because na shell dey manage NLNG)

so me as a person I am not against favouring a freind or a brother for something,But there must be 101%chance that person deserves that role,so in an event of issues it can be defended.

Na every truth una dey talk? Grin Cheesy. Omor this country no be for the weak at all,  if you no get mind depression go just finish your life. Reason why I dey talk like this na because of wattin I don experience. I been don share this story for this board before, when I finish school, me and my guys been go out to find industrial training(IT). Omor for the entire warri edjeba, any company wey we enter ask if slot dey, Dem dey tell us say for we to gain industrial training experience for there say we gats know one person for inside we be our relatives. Meaning man must know man before we go get a chance of becoming their trainee. Mind you, no be job we dey look for oo. Come imagine say na job, how e wan be? I no even understand where this country sef dey go.

It has become a part of us to always favour those related to us more than any other person when we are in the position of power and if you are in the position to employ people and you refuse putting your people first, you would be termed foolish.

The phrase you want to please others and displease yourself is not strange to us because it was assumed that former president goodluck Jonathan was not considering his people first while making all his policies and could not even influence a meaningful project to his home town.

For me, their is always a time when the concept of man know man should be applied because everybody want to employ someone that will give them peace of mind and that will be loyal to them but I guess the emphasis should be on how best we can regulate it such that the best brain are not left stranded because some of them are not affiliated with any rich individual.

Their was a time I sort for admission in a vocational center that was situated in a community, they made it that after everyone writes the entrance examination, regardless of what you'll score, the ratio of those getting admired would be 70% from the host community, 20% from the state and the remaining 10% can come from outside state. Although the ratio has a huge gap, if it was moderated, it would be okay because after considering the indigen, others would still have the benefit of being a part of the programme but the negative part would still be that some of the qualified persons that are not indigenous people would miss out on the admission.

What I'm saying in essence is that man no man will still exist but let's understand that the best brains are also their in the society and we need to also use that as a serious index when carrying out any employment process.

One funny thing here is that no one will want to employ a relative that is incompetent in his private firm over an outsider that can burst the business positively.

Na most for public or government firms this man no man something de serious and na for position when no go affect the company like that na him de fit use this method take person if not how you wan go take person when no sabi shit to run your business when you start with your hard earned money just because he his your relative. you reason am na
