Understood. But if you want to make money mining is not the answer. You will actually lose money mining right now - so many people jumped in that the pie got gobbled up already.

Treat Bitcoin like an investment like buy some gold or artwork. Buy as much as you can as an investment and put it in a wallet and store it offline (don't leave the $ on the exchange). If BTC goes up in price you make money without having to worry about mining.

If you are intending to mine to help out a bad economic situation, run away, run away and never look back

If you can treat bitcoin mining as a fun hobby where you get to hack around with hardware and software and potentially make a bit of money along the way, go for it

otherwise, it is way too risky an investment to be making if you are already in a bad financial situation.

you really need to be doing some Google surfing before you go investing. I'm also relatively new to BTC and the world of mining but my itch is only get stronger.
I have been researching for weeks now on what to buy. I think im going to start with a Antminer s1 for $250 then wait for the S3 and also going to buy
a alt coin miner. some are due in august and i have 2 on pre order and that will get me 20 mh/s for roughly $650. exciting times to come in the mining world Cool

@ramchik - first, welcome to the addictive world of mining and to BTC in general. Congratulations on finding your very first share.

Now, on to the bad news. As has been stated, the days of CPU/GPU mining of BTC are long since over. You are effectively paying more for the mining process than you can ever possibly hope to recover by mining. There are plenty of ASIC options that are extremely cheap and will offer you orders of magnitude more hashing power than your GT8500. For example, you can pick up an Antminer U2 for around $10 USD. You just plug that into a USB port on your computer and go. It will give you approximately 2GH/s, which is 1000 times faster than your GPU.

If you do wish to only use your computer for mining, and not purchase any additional hardware, I would suggest looking into some of the alternative coins. Those you can mine and hopefully trade for BTC through an exchange.

Unless you want to use your miner as a heater to warm your place, 2mh/s wont earn you much bitcoin. You might look into asic based miners to give your more hashing power.

In simple terms:

The 8500GT video that you have is using 100W of power every hour. With 10 cent electricity it would cost you 24 cents per day to mine and $7.20 per month to mine.

The 1 share you submitted earns you about 1/100th of a penny. The dirt in between your couch cushions has more value. Your urine would sell for more.

You're basically wasting electricity and getting nothing accomplished. Like running heater and AC at the same time.
