I like ETH, it is a cool alt but to my mind ETH can’t become the largest cryptocurrency on market cap. BTC is the main “cryptoboss” and nowadays (in our reality) no one crypto coin will ever reach BTC in capitalization. Millions of miners mine BTC every second, others invest to get even a small part of BTC, all of them believe in “BTC to the moon”. After this year jump (when BTC first time reached 50K) whales has been trying to bring it down for several times already but every time they couldn’t do it, every time they come up against a crowd of good traders and hamsters, who purchased BTC immediately by lower prices. ETH is good but to overcome all these it’s unreal. It seems for me that now BTC can lead to crash only apocalypses but then all other crypto will crash as well.

It will never happen.
We know that BTC can't do what ETH can do. But no matter how big the ecosystem for dapps for Ethereum including the NFTs and other projects, it will not flippen or even be par with bitcoin.
I think this has been on discussions for so many years and when ETH goes POS, security will go for bitcoin as the better.

Crypto land behaves in many strange and bizarre ways, so anything could happen in the future. Of course, PoS will reduce ETH's security and reliability. But I believe ETH will still be more secure than its counterparts due to the vast number of validators supporting it worldwide. I'd be surprised if ETH "pumps" to new All-time-highs after the ETH 2.0 upgrade. If ETH's growth rate is higher than Bitcoin's, then a "flippening" will happen faster than you could've ever imagined. This won't make that much of a difference other than removing BTC's position as the reserve cryptocurrency on the market. What matters above all else is decentralization. As long as decentralization prevails, nothing else matters. Just my opinion Smiley

Seen one of the videos from Benjamin Cowen but it should have x2 market cap right now to have that flippening but he quoted there that in 2017 it did flip or I guess it was near to flip, can't remember it clearly. I don't know if it could happen this year, I'll just be waiting on the sidelines if it will happen by 2022, everything is possible but near term, I'm still in doubt.

Not saying it will but even if it happens, it won't change a thing. The most important feature of a crypto currency is its real life usage. Unless Eth beats bitcoin in this area, marketcap alone don't mean a thing. Bitcoin is the most traded crypto out there and it is accepted by the most crypto merchants. If some other crypto becomes more popular than btc, then it will replace btc but I don't see it happening in the near future.

There have been talks about Ethereum "flippening" Bitcoin to become the largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Knowing that ETH has a huge ecosystem of dApps, tokens, and services around it, anything's possible. Yet, what's stopping ETH from replacing Bitcoin is the ever-increasing gas fees. It's much cheaper to transact on the Bitcoin blockchain than on the Ethereum blockchain. Not only that, but BTC is much more secure than ETH itself. If somehow ETH reduced its fees, and increased its security, it would've been the best cryptocurrency in the world.

Do you think "The Flippening" will happen sometime in the future? If not, why? How will the market react after ETH becomes the largest cryptocurrency by market cap? Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Smiley

This has been the speculation or prediction ever since Ethereum become the second top coin in the market, but I don't think this will happen, there are so many complaints on fees and transaction speed, there's a lot of threat on Etherem position right now, three to five years from now there could be a major shake-up in the market and Ethereum could risk its position, or they might finally take the number one spot the market is very dynamic and volatile we don't know what's going to happen in the future.

One more thing that prevent Eth from becoming the most popular and valuable cryptocurrency is its hard cap. Bitcoin is limited and it gives additional value to it, while ethereum is unlimited. But actually, I think that ethereum will overtake bitcoin one day as it is more dynamic. Bitcoin is updating once in 3 years while Ethereum's team is constantly developing it. I think that ethereum 2.0. will reduce gas fees and it will become the biggest currency then.

There are occassions wherein the gap is narrowing, though knowing bitcoin and how many people believe in it, that gap is widen, and bitcoin still remains to be the top coin in the crypto world. Also, a few failed 'upgrade' on ETH and its insanely high gas fees also sealed the deal. Had it not been for those "upgrades" that happened, bitcoin would have been toppled even just for a while, and we see the flippening happeningnright at our very own eyes.

This "flippening" almost happened a few years ago but the gap has widened since then. I know ETH has outperformed BTC but we should probably put the topic to rest until it's within 70% or 80% of the King's marketcap.

...If somehow ETH reduced its fees, and increased its security, it would've been the best cryptocurrency in the world.
The former can happen with ETH 2.0
The latter won't. POW > POS when it comes to security.

I doubt that it will happen even in the future though,

1. Bitcoin has solid investors, or shall I say maximalist, there's no way that this guys are going to flip to Ethereum
2. Ethereum gas fees are even higher than Bitcoin right now
3. Ethereum has a lot of competitors, if there will be this so called Flippening, it might be on Ethereum losing it's place at the top of altcoin market
4. I don't think the Ethereum gas fees are going to lower down in the future as it is being controlled by miners or validators

I guess it is not "impossible", but that's about it. I am not seeing it as a possible thing, I am not seeing it as a probable thing more like. So, I believe that there is a good chance that bitcoin will stay at the top forever, but at the same time we have seen some crazy stuff in crypto and ETH flipping BTC would not be the craziest thing we have seen. We just need to see ETH doing 2x while bitcoin not moving, or at that level of difference in their moves, and that is not impossible.

All in all crypto is a great thing and it is decentralized, which means that what is going to happen is not based on anyone specific, it is based on what we will do. Will we flip it or not, that is the real question. Look at the market sentiment in both of them and you will see if people are considering that to be possible or not, if you see more love for ETH then it could be possible.

Yet, what's stopping ETH from replacing Bitcoin is the ever-increasing gas fees.
That's not just it, there are many things that makes Bitcoin better than ethereum other than high price of gas fee, Bitcoin is and will always be better than ethereum cause it remains the crypto that majority of crypto users trust to be sustainable for the long period, I know eth can also be said to be a long term project as well, but Bitcoin is much more trusted on that terms, also Bitcoin is getting to the stage of mass adoption with institutional investors and prominent individuals all making their way into the network, not just that, some countries are also adopting the network as a legal tender, all this and many more makes Bitcoin far bigger and better than eth.

Having said that, if the eth developers do something about the really high gas fees on their network I think it would also increase the number of investors they have presently, and it'll promote their network, but I don't think ethereum or any coin for that matter has what it takes to compete with Bitcoin.

It's never going to happen and this have been discussed too many times already, ETH will rather stay where it is than flipping BTC position, to be smart contract is what makes ETH a better project and that's because it was the first to Introduce smart contract, just imagine if solana came in 2011 after BTC? ETH won't be able to catch up

op,I agree with you. What you said may happen in a few years. But it is possible only if reduce the fee and offer stronger security. If the fees are reduced then they will be able to buy and this will happen as their buyers increase in the market.

No ETA but it may possible to happen anytime. The only thing that makes ethereum a bit superior compared with bitcoin should be from the smartcontract but remember that ethereum has non sense fees compared with bitcoin transaction. that proves that if bitcoin will still reliable to be the best cryptocurrency in the world. The latest update on ethereum 2.0 has been making so many people feel disappointed caused by the price for the fees never gone down again. This has been forcing so many people to send the transaction with high fees. The latest pump that happened with ethereum has been proving if ethereum can compete with bitcoin but remember if a few years ago ethereum has evern flipped bitcoin as the top crypto. The history can repeat again but none knows when that will be coming for sure.

I wonder if that can boost ETH's price to the very highest price if that happens because right now, the market cap of ETH is half that bitcoin market cap. Maybe that will change how the cryptocurrency will evolve because there will be many smart contracts under ETH that will also come with the new layer while ETH can be the king of them. Everything can happen in the future as the technology of crypto will grow fast and we are still inside of crypto and want to take part in the crypto. Maybe from now on, we must save more and more ETH, not just bitcoin, because ETH has a big chance to grow higher in the future.

In case you don't know OP BTC now has its own smart contract capabilities so we don't know how this will be patronised in coming years, BTC will remain the first no matter what and I think ETH can easily be flipped instead of BTC, be more worried about ETH instead.

Never going to happen, why? Cos it's always about BTC, to my own understanding BTC got us here today, people tend to trust BTC more and 99% of time BTC decides what happens to the market, BTC is power on its own for the whole crypto market
