For thousands of years, the evergreen forests of the north have been looked after by Lavskägge. With great care and dedication, he has been preserving the trees, the grass, every little bush and every little corner of dirt, so future generations could experience the beauty of nature first hand.
Once upon a time, people were grateful for Lavskägge’s efforts, but things took a very, very different turn as the years passed by. Folks lost a bit of their connections with nature itself: after hundreds of years, most people moved to big cities, where they lived in jungles of concrete, steel, rumbling engines, garage doors and other things that are far from Lavskägge’s forests. As time went by, humans grew more and more detached with their natural environment, seldom stopping to appreciate the beauty of nature. The worst part, however, was not that humans were far from the forests: they were destroying them to make room for more of the urban folly: more concrete, more factories, more waste.
Lavskägge has been protecting the forests for thousands of years, but today, he is not able to keep up on his own. He feels overpowered by the huge amount of things to do and the huge way to carry on his shoulders. Protecting the forest is no easy task when people would attack it in every possible way. Some would try and tear down trees to make room for other buildings or harvest wood. Others would dump waste or other pollutions in the middle of the woods, while others would simply do something reckless, like throwing a lit cigarette but on the side of a road, from their speeding car, unfortunately causing forest fires.
Lavskägge, for the first time in his immortal life, started to feel defeated. He kept uttering and murmuring to himself: “What am I going to do? What is even the point in protecting the forest, if nobody seem to care about it”.
On a faithful day, tired and saddened, Lavskägge almost decided to finally leave Nordlandia and retire, thinking that he was not going to be able to do much for the forest, not for longer, not anymore. With that mindset, Lavskägge packed his bags and he was ready to set for new horizon, somewhere, somehow. As he was about to leave, he took a final gaze at the heart of the forest. The memories started to flow in and he just could not resist taking a final walk through the woods - one final stroll, for old times sake, just before he would finally take off for goods. As he was walking, there was a smile on his face. He saw an old, dying tree, but it smiled at it, because he remembered the day it was born, many, many moons ago. The suddenly, he saw a little boy - a human. Lavskägge hid on a treetop, so the boy would not see him, but he kept on spying him from above, curious to see what he was doing.
The little boy got off the road and ventured deeper in the woods nearby, carrying a small pouch. Lavskägge kept following him curiously and silently, swirling from tree to tree. The boy found a patch in the woods without any trees, then opened up his pouch and released some seeds. “Grow! Grow!” he exclaimed, as he was happily throwing the seeds around.
As the boy returned to the road, Lavskägge was moved and inspired. He went to his home and decided to stay, instead of leaving as he had previously planned.
As long as people still care, Lavskägge, the spirit of the woods, would still protect the forests of Nordlandia…and he was not alone!
