Both.
I enjoy researching the best software and hardware to use, the assembly of the rig (in a milk crate!), and tweaking to get the best performance-to-power ratio. But like you said, the increasing difficulty has made GPU mining unprofitable. Moreso where I live with electricity costing nearly 30 cents per kw/h... There are always the alt-coins to try out, but it's a challenge to keep your head above water. Just look at all the coins on Crypsty!
I think you've got the right idea, using a low power ASIC miner that costs you very little in electricity, but contributes something to the network hashrate.

I have been here on forum for last 4 months read and read information about mining.
yestarday I decided register here.
For me I think that will not be possible mining for money.
I will mining with a Raspberry Pi using usb asic but will be only for hobby not with intention to make money.
Probably with incrase of dificulty I will never recover the investement but I like mining.
What you think about mining?
