Roulette has always been one of my favorite games at the casino.  It's easy to play / understand, happens quickly (games last like 3-4 minutes or so on average) and it's just fund to me for some reason.

Have you guys ever seen the Jacob & Co roulette watch?  If not, watch this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3xAhyHLvHU ).  This watch is absolutely insane!  I think it's like a couple hundred thousand dollars too which is nuts, but if I were super rich I'd probably buy one of these.

Just saw this watch for the first time, and is nice, people think a lot. Yet on a critical look and thought, I believe that the principle behind its operations will be super simple, it's the roulette design that will be replicated, while the watch continues to function normally. Unless there are some expensive materials used, that should not be the case with the amount you called.

As for the game itself, I hardly play it, and the reason is that I like it only offline and not online. It's a small wheel game that relies on chances/luck and skills, which makes me trust more transparency offline.

I confess that I didn't know that, but I found this kind of content very interesting to read!!
Sometimes I think it's cool to learn about random things, even though I have a very superficial knowledge of betting, casinos, gambling.
Yes. I agree with you, because reading broading our perspective to understanding the world better, and no amount of knowledge is ever a waste. Because I never knew this, and this thread, have made me understand the game of "Roulette" better.
There are few things I learnt about the history of Roulette
1. Roulette was invented out of failure to invent a perpetual motion machine.

2. The Roulette wheel was invented by a French physicist, inventor, and mathematician named Blaise Pascal.

3. The machine was invented in the year 1655

4. The Roulette wheel had no zero until the mid-19th century.

5. The Roulette wheel as invented by Pascal remained the same for centuries.

6. The Roulette machine had its first redesign in 1842 by Francois and Lois Blanc when King Charles III of Monaco ordered for it as a means for generating income.

It is very interesting to know the origin of all this, Roulette is one of the games of chance that are most sought after in casinos, I cannot deny that I really like this game, the truth is that when I have been to (physical) casinos What I like the most is to go to these roulettes, first because it is a game that is completely random and second because it is a way that when there are many playing is when I like to get involved the most, because I think the chances of winning increase, because everyone is putting money in and they are not only playing against the casino, so I think it is like trading, if you win it is because someone else lost, but never because the casino loses, and in trading it is not because the exchange loses but rather someone else person, I don't know if I'm wrong, but that's how I see it.

like you both , I love playing roulette but never thought of which this comes from and yeah just now that I understand that this is one of the oldest form of gambling (using machines) and yes while I totally believe that this is a luck based gambling yet there are some people that tries to beat the game by their knowledge and mathematics.
thanks for this complete info mate , it really lighten me best.

Same. After reading the above, the name seem to be familiar to me and I don't know if when or where did I heard it but maybe it was also in school days like you because in school we are always introduced to the famous personalities and if what are their contributions but they never talk about gambling there I think teachers are only avoiding it as they know that it can cause curiousness to their students.

Not only roulette games but all gambling games have always been reinvented. They make it look modernized to appeal the players more. If in roulette they add the number zero. In poker history thread that I read last time, I found out that the number of cards where increased dramatically. Pretty interesting though.
Yeah! but I thought Blaise Pascal only knew math just kidding, I didn't know that he invented it I wonder why he did that maybe he was just bored or something? I don't know. But yeah it is good that it is innovated and they still account the invention to Pascal, it's cool to have this kind of trivia in this thread and maybe we can thank Op For that. but then if that is actually invented by a mathematician so it is possible to win consecutively with the help of math as well? just curious.

I've learned Blaise Pascal during my school days and I didn't know that he's got also the history of making this game, roulette. And even until now, we're playing the game that he has invented.
Yeah, it's sort of different today because it's been reinvented but OGs don't forget where it all started and who's the one to credit for his work. You made me read again a few things about Blaise Pascal and damn, he's got a lot of titles and achievements.

I'm sure that it was during the school days but I can't vividly remember if that's during elementary or high school days. Anyway, it's true that many gambling games have been reinvented and that's okay.
Because usually, when there's some catch or has to change for its way of playing to add some excitement. Those that have adopted it adds more flavor to make it more interesting and that's very essential.

I can know any mathematical or historical aspect of poker and its players, when I really like something I like to address all the topics that surround it.

Not the case with roulette, which I play since crypto casinos started as a betting route to these games for me, but I had already read something about  roulette, the story of player that defied all odds on roulette.

That's why your comment made me remember how a player and practically his family discovered some of the situations you named for roulette.

I'm just going to put his name, there are books, documentaries, Los Pelayos.

They won millions of dollars in the 90s, by the way I know about their history from a poker player, a close friend of the Pelayos, this player is (also) Spanish Juan Carlos Mortensen, the first player from Spain and Latin America to win the most important event of poker in the world, the main event WSOP.

OP: a summary of any source is appreciated is the relevance, I believe above all in such extensive topics in dates, people and particularities.

I have never played roulette in a physical casino, in fact I have never entered a physical casino, but looking at the roulette in this photo, I wonder what it will be like on the day that I have some opportunity to play roulette in a physical casino, maybe I will lose a lot as I am a very unlucky person, but the day I have a chance to enter a physical casino I will definitely play roulette

The Roulette game is one of the most popular casino games ever. It can be found in almost every casino around the 7 corners of the earth.

The game was actually invented in the 17th Century by the famous French mathematician Blaise Pascal.
Of course, nowadays the game is very different from the early one that did not have the number 0.
You can read more about it here.

Yes, Blaise Pascal was a great scientist and philosopher!

In addition to roulette, he invented a calculator, that is, a prototype of a personal computer.  In addition, he formulated many provisions of the mathematical theory of probability.  He and his friends (the royal musketeers) loved to play dice and other games of chance.

And since he was a great mathematician, he studied the probabilities of certain outcomes of gambling, thereby formulating the provisions of the mathematical theory of probability.

Yeah, it looks like Pascal loved to gamble and never missed the chance to play with his friends. In fact, this was about why he actually created the roulette game. He is also one of the most important figures in the history of scientific development as he developed a lot of concepts that are still used today in the designing of heavy machinery. He was also one of the most fierce defenders of the Scientific Method approach to which he wrote several essays.

I tend to dislike pure luck based games because I feel like you should be able to help yourself win through games. But sometimes luck based games like roulette feels really relaxed, you don't spend any effort and just take a wild guess. And it really takes no time to define winner and losers here, what a quick game.
I didn't know Roulette was French game but name "Roulette" suggested it somehow, I realized this after I read this post.
This is the beauty on reading up things on this forum which it could really give out new learnings and awareness on things that we might not have able to encounter before including this one.

We've been playing roulette game but doesnt know on whats the origin of it, just like the rest this is my first time on learning and been aware that Blaise pascal is involved on this one.

When it comes to luck based games like this game then we do have different variations that we are seeing aside from the original but overall concept is really just the same.

I wish someone would closely examine and test a roulette wheel from a science and mathematical perspective.

They could have physical defects and imperfections which would result in them repeating some results more consistently than others. It could be interesting to know if that is true and what the margin for statistical prediction is.

If there is temperature fluctuation between day and night cycles, the roulette wheel could contract and expand due to thermal expansion and contraction. Red and black segments could have some very slight temperature variation between them. The wood grain pattern of the wheel might influence movement of the ball.

It would be interesting to know if many small variables and deterministic phenomena could be compiled to produce a working predictive model of where the ball is likely to land.

Isn't it interesting how gambling on a low level is associated with impulsive behavior and addiction. While gambling on a high level could be associated more with math, science and logic.

^^ We may not have the names that change the game from it initially, but it was good that they have improved the game for us. I mean when they played in before, maybe someone see that for example here, Roulette need some tweaks and fix to make it more exciting.

And then probably make it for the casino to win, like making a "00" to make it harder to hit if you are aiming for a single number bet.

But that watch though, so beautiful, but only the whales can afford it.

I am still searching for that game, that is still the same today, as it was far back when it was invented, because for all i know, every game we play today seems to not be as they were in the their early days, talk about
Poker
Dice
blackjack
and now ..Roulette
etc .. all this games have changed from their initial versions, and some times, i cant help but wonder who are the ones responsible for this change and how did they do it, and this also tells us that this same games are likely to still change for our future generations.

Anyways, its always good to get to learn the history of the things we enjoy today, how they came into existence and by whom, i hope we all work hard so as to me remembered for something the same way we remember this man today for his invention .

Well if you wanted to have some fun, then roulette might be the game for you. But who knows, maybe you are extremely lucky and hit that single number, payout is huge at a single unit to 36 unit in a single 0.

What's interesting is the inventor though, he created it to test probabilities and what not, but some more genius guy turn into a game that up to know, many people around the world become addicted to it.

It's impressive how rich people spend their money. While a big part of the world grows hungry rich people are getting richer while poor people's living conditions are going through the drain. For the price of this gadget, you could feed a lot of people... Ok, so, everyone is free to decide where they spend their money, but rich people should have more Social Responsibility and should be the ones finding solutions to stop poverty. Instead, rich people don't mind if people are growing hungry and just want to know about profit...

I remember reading about the history of roulette back in the day.

It's funny how it played an important role in the financing of Monaco when they had money problems. This should teach us a lesson, the big winner is always the house. Although I like to play from time to time, in fact I played a few weeks ago, with no luck. Anyone who expects roulette to be the solution to their problems is likely to end up increasing their money problems.

0 have just been added to another form of taking players bet  Grin but I must admit that I am one of the players that loves Betting in 0 though the odd is too slim to get  Grin

Sometimes it still occurs in my head that I might win big and plays roulette sometimes. The realization comes back when 2-3 losses are over.

The 0 and 00 just make the house edge higher but players will not mind the two, all we see is red and black. It deceives our brain into thinking it's fair because there is only 2 noticeable color. Do you know why they didn't add 000?

adding another 0 will be something very risky and tricky I guess , though there is no impossible thing to see this happening soon  Wink

Nowadays we have many types of roulettes with different chances of winning and many people are liking the online ones with much less effort, especially since the coronavirus pandemic there was no chance for go to a real casino so the best option was playing online casinos where they offer roulettes with different options and started editing them like the lightning roulette which can be good sometimes.
But honestly i prefer the old classic one, making me feel more lucky to it and also more profitable of course

The concept will probably be the same but it was evolved over the years passed and until now it has become online not offline casino only and the good thing is they maintain the probability of the game. Probably before you can play a Roulette game if you are rich people that can go offline casinos and it should be you have a big amount, but now, it is for all because we can easily access it on the website and play.
Landbased casinos preserved this game. It is still being played the same way for decades. But in some online gambling platforms , it took a new form; some made it more complicated and some made it easier to visualize and understand. If I would be asked which one I preferred, I have 2 sides; new ones gives bigger odds because there are 'combinations'(?) which gives extra rewards, but older roulette games gives somewhat of nostalgia and true gambling experience. Feel free to correct me 'coz this is just as how I view this game.
Pascal's done alot of Wonders as I would sometimes feel uncertain on how to comprehend the whole phenomenon; behind his series, innovations, perceptions etc.... Just mind blowing. Yunno back then, everyone was highly intellectual so anyone who would wanna have fun exclusively, wouldn't expect having it as a piece of cake ( even with the fact that you spend your money on 'em). Just like his early inventions, he developed the roulette games in a very logical way that not just anyone could get away with that and, it happens to be one of the most VALUED games any casino would wanna venture into. Roulette? That has alot of criterias that the guru programmed just with the use of random integers.

Sandra 💇
Blaise pascal is indeed a genius. He's more into numbers and probability. What I like the most with his theory of probability is that; it can be showed using numbers and described using characters. It is somehow a midpoint between  real world and numbers. Lol.
It happened that he's really into enjoyment which is why he came up as well with this roulette.

Nice!!!!

When I started gambling I went to learn about this classic game at every casino.
Today casinos make the most of it to get any advantage over players, but it wasn't always that way... in France in 1842 François and Louis Blanc changed the hitherto traditional two-zero roulette to a wheel with a single zero, decreasing thus the house edge and offering a better return to players.
This version quickly gained popularity, soon replacing the double zero version of the wheel and was spread as 'European Roulette'.

It's very popular both online and land-based its just so interesting and weird that it comes from a failed experiment by one of the greatest mathematicians, the number zero was done to give the house a bigger house edge which is why it becomes a favorite by casino owners, its very entertaining for players and at the same time the casino operators have a big edge, it continues to be the popular game of chance, its one of the first thing that you will see in a casino when you enter and one of the biggest money maker of both online and offline.

The Roulette game has been a part of casinos all over the world for centuries. It started off as a simple task for a player to spin a wheel and depend on the law of probability. With time, the roulette game has grown and evolved into one of Las Vegas' most popular games. The game is enjoyed by many people from all walks of life because it is easy to understand while offering excitement and thrills to all who play it. It is said that Roulette is one of the easiest games to play, but I would dare argue that it can be one of the most difficult to win. The roulette has a high house edge, in European Roulette, the house edge is 2.7%; in American Roulette it's 5.26%, but it is still a very popular and fun game, and can be quite thrilling.

Yeah, in the beginning it was really crude but it has evolved so much that it include 0 and double 00.

I actually do play roulette, however I only bet on single 0 table, as it is more "advantageous" to play, 36:1. Just remember that there are no science or math that will sway the favor for the gambler here, this is pure luck base game. Only way to beat the house is that if you found a table that is biased. But if will take a lot of your time to identify it and casinos now have prevented it as they are also shuffling their roulette machine to counter it. The game was actually invented in the 17th Century by the famous French mathematician Blaise Pascal.
Of course, nowadays the game is very different from the early one that did not have the number 0.
You can read more about it here.
