Thats not true , you can still use some of the old Versions of Cgminer 3.7.2 and below or some speciall SgMiner Versions below Version 5.0 for mine Scrypt or SHA-256.I still have some Versions of a few Miningsoftware Version where i have mined back in the Days around 2012 -2013 for Bitcoin and Litcoin with a GPU.

You are asking about altcoins, since with PC it makes no sense to mine btc. Btc mining nowadays is only carried out with ASICs.
