The novel Thieves Emporium covers the field of free economics pretty well by using gold as an example.  I keep getting asked why Bitcoins aren't mentioned.  (I'm the publisher.)  This seems like a good venue to answer the question, so:

One of the objectives of the book is to show how government control of the money supply allows the rich to control us.  The point could be made just as well with gold or Bitcoins, but everyone understands how gold works.  The author (correctly, in my opinion) decided to avoid having to add the technical issues of Bitcoins by using only gold as an example.

OK, that may not be the best explanation in the world, but I will do better if anyone wants.  Just let me know.
