Oh, on the point about a 'seed'. Yes, I had hoped that the fairness would be obvious to incline people to give it a go. So, I might on the next round put in 10 to 50 BTC as a starter.

The amount that could have been won here was rather large if people participated comparable to 'mining contracts' but not having to wait to receive the BTC.

My point about picking 16 as the first number is holding true tho...

Since right now, 16 would provide the best odds of winning. Your point is also true. Someone should just pick 17 then and then 18 etc...

Even though those numbers don't provide the best amount of combinations, the next closest but lower number rule would work. Unless, after 16 is chosen someone picks 100 instead of 17.

Meh... I'm preaching to the choir. I am sure you've analyzed it.

I think there might be more strategy if you let people pick the same slot and made them share the prize. Then there is a tension between the more likely numbers being desirable but not wanting to split. Being first on the best number that doesn't get doubled up on (will depend on the number of slots a player expect to be bought) would be ideal.

Curiously, what are the more likely numbers?

Your suggestion would provide tension but lets see how the rules as set work for selling out.

Do you think the game, as structured, is fair?

I think it must be fair since we all have the same position and choices right now. Of course it could be that the right move is not to play and it seems to me (I've not thought carefully) that when you pick a number someone will come in and choose one number above you reducing your chances by a lot.

The sums are certainly not equally likely.

16 can happen in exactly one way, disregarding order.

18 can happen with 1 2 3 4 5 8 or 1 2 3 4 6 7.

The numbers in the middle have many many more ways of happening.

I actually think that makes it a potentially interesting game.

I think things like this need a seed to get the ball rolling. Take a cut so that if you make a fun game that people like you can get your money risked and more back.

If you don't mind I might try to run a different version of this before long. If you want to try again though I'd rather not butt in.

No I wouldn't mind at all. I tried to come up with an interesting game to make people think and use strategy while providing an indisputable method of proving the winner. Your point about the combinations is spot on but because of the "the next closest but lower number would win" rule it makes it a little more complicated than just picking combinations depending on which slots are taken.

It was/is an honest effort to provide a fair but interesting game.

Thanks for your input.

This is interesting. There is strategy, but I don't think it is to pick 16 first!

The ∑ Number Game - Week 5/2 to 5/9

Please Read all. If any questions, feel free to ask.

Slot Price: 0.5 BTC sent to:  1LG9NweYZkmfaKW6XyLcB3uLhqR73WMCmv

The Winning ∑ =:  ( The Winning Sum Will be Put Here on Wednesday 09/May/2012 )

The Primer:

This game, depending on the number of entries, combines straight up odds with strategy. The winner is chosen by an indisputable method. The ∑ of the PowerBall numbers on Wednesdays. e.g. If the PowerBall numbers are 13, 40, 05, 50, 03, 35, then the sum of the numbers would be equal to: 146.

The person that choses that number would win. If no one chose that number, then the next closest but lower number would win. The 'Strategy' would come into play if all the possible slots are not sold out. e.g. If 100 to 145 has not been chosen, then purchasing slot 100 would cover all slots from 100 to 145 unless someone else chooses one of those slots. So, given those rules, the very first slot chosen should be 16. Because if no one else picks a slot above that number, that person would win by default.

The Rules:

Pick a Number from 16 to 350. Multiple slots can be purchased.

Make a post with your chosen number(s) and the amount required to the above BTC address and the return BTC address in case you win and/or a refund is warranted. e.g. Choose numbers 69, 150, 222 and pay 0.5 BTC • 3 = 1.5 BTC
Please include the txn number if possible in the post.

If two posts are made with the same numbers and payments have been received, the first post will get the slot. The second poster will be able to pick a new slot of their choosing.

If by chance No one has the winning number and their is no next closest number, the funds will be carried over to the next weeks game. e.g. Slots 50 to 100 are purchased but the sum of the numbers are 40. Since no one has chosen 40 or any slots below it, the funds will be carried over.

If only 1 slot is chosen, the 0.5 BTC will be matched unless the number chosen is higher than the sum of the numbers.

All entries must be in before Tuesday at 23:59 UTC.  Any Late Entries will be refunded.

The Payouts:

The Winner will receive 90% of the amount received.

The Forum will receive 9% of the entries to go towards the Forum Software Project.

The last 1% will go into the BTC_Challenge fund. This fund is to give out BTC to winners of a BTC_Challenge. The purpose of this fund is to spread the use of BTC while allowing new comers a chance at receiving BTC and have a little fun.

The Winner will be chosen within 1 hour after the Drawing on 9 May 2012 and payouts will commence.

The below section will be updated at least once per day.
