A nice gesture, but if they already wanted to record that moment for history in some way, they could have made a slightly larger plaque for the reason that it would be more visible and that it would be easier for people to take pictures with it.
Well I didn't try to verify as to how long that plague was made but should it date back to a decade ago as the purchase, I guess they weren't thinking on how huge bitcoin and the event would come to be. In fact, the event is gaining more recognition of recent with the increased bitcoin price and so do we hear other testimonies on how people have spent so much of an investment on a supposed $2-5 purchase. Perhaps a more elaborate sign would be made in the nearest future and the history would be better preserved in ground style.

About this, what happens to privacy/anonimity?!
As much as this could be a great idea, a lot of users wouldn't buy into this to keep their identity.

This was a historic moment in Bitcoin, and it's good to see that it's being commemorated.
That reserves a good appreciation as it was one of the highlights of bitcoin when bitcoin was still in its infancy stage. As no one expects that bitcoin’s worth before who was only used to buy pizza can now purchase the whole pizza stand while it’s value is still in surge right now. This one deserves a golden plaque, and we should always be grateful for it as bitcoin starts with a humble beginning.

... Maybe even people go there as a tourist attraction...

it will take a few more years for this event to be remembered/recognized even by no-coiners Wink

It seems almost childish (in their eyes) to remember the event of a sale of a pizza with so much interest, but they do not realize the historicity and value of such gesture.

Cool, the staff look so happy in the photo Cheesy
It’s such a huge part of the early history of bitcoin. Maybe even people go there as a tourist attraction, that wouldn’t surprise me.

Any way, thanks for sharing. Always good to see something positive on the forum these days.

I believe after 100 years, Laszlo Hanyecz's "10,000 Bitcoin Pizza Moment" will be written in history books...

It is now already part of history, although it is not exactly something that is known outside the community that is gathered around Bitcoin. Those who do know about this information often criticize Laszlo because he spent so many Bitcoins on only 2 pizzas, although they do not understand that people mined BTC with personal computers and the reward per block was as much as 50 BTC at that time.

Laszlo, unlike most people today, understood why Bitcoin was created, and he showed it with his example.

I believe no one actually knows what Bitcoin potentially is 12 years ago, and still no one knows what it can currently be today and the future. The market might not be pricing in the fact that Bitcoin can be used to weaken political "strongholds". That's no mere Medium Of Exchange for buying pizzas. Bitcoin's ethos and design to preserve censorship-resistance, and the resources spent to maintain it, it's more than just another "consumer-product" for personal finance.

Who are all these people in the photo? Do I understand correctly that they are all related to the Papa John's store? Are any of them known in the bitcoin-community and have something to do with this pizza-day, like Laszlo?

This can be interesting to use as a bonus prize. For example, the winner of the next pizza-making competition will receive a trip and a free pizza at this historical place. Smiley

As mentioned here before, they're probably from the local bitcoin meetup.

The actual pizza transaction was made between Laszlo Hanyecz(laszlo here in bitcointalk), who paid 10,000 BTC for 2 large pizzas, and Jeremy Sturdivant (jercos). The transaction was done through IRC: https://en.bitcoinwiki.org/wiki/Jercos

Here's an interview with Jeremy Sturdivant if anyone wants to know a bit more: https://www.bitcoinwhoswho.com/index/jercosinterview

I think the plaque looks very nice! My only concern would be that unless it's covered with some polish (and it doesn't look covered), the image will degrade over time because it's wood, and wood is susceptible to weather damage and it generally quite easy to ruin. I hope this was also thought of, and the image will be preserved in that nice way that it is right now. I'm happy Papa John's got this thing because it's an advertisement for Bitcoin as well as something that gives them special positive publicity (makes them different from tons of other pizza chains).

That's pretty awesome.  I hadn't heard anything about this before.  Thank you for sharing.  It seems like a pretty awesome thing to be able to claim.  If I owned that store, I'd be trying to make sure that everyone knew it was the home of the first Bitcoin purchase.  Papa John's should be running specials and they should be accepting BTC at the store as well as having an ATM machine and custom branding to reflect it.  Why not go all out?  While the plaque is nice, I feel like Papa John's is missing out on an opportunity to use this historical happening to their advertising advantage.  I bet some Bitcoiners would travel pretty far to see this store if it were done up right.

You just totally spoke what I had in mind, because Papa John's store is actually missing out on a golden opportunity of a lifetime, because looking at the background of the picture, I can't find any sign of Bitcoin, promoting that he was actually the maker of the famous Bitcoin Pizza 🍕, because despite the fact it is been mention online that Papa John's is the maker of the famous Bitcoin Pizza, there needs to be a physical sign of either a statue of 2 Pizzas🍕 🍕 with a Bitcoin inscription, so that for people who will travel from far and here, could see what to hold up memories with.
But, in as much as we remember Papa John's pizza, let us not forget the very person who made this day a day to remember, which is the person who bought the 2 pizzas with 10,000 Bitcoin known as Laszlo Hanyecz

Maybe because it's not a privately owned location and they got this only because the manager allowed them?

You are probably right, and maybe there is some law that determines how big a plaque can be, which would not surprise me at all, considering that various federal states in the US have very strange laws to say the least. Speaking of pizza, if you find yourself in Louisiana don't try to be generous and send someone a pizza as a surprise Cheesy

This is what pisses me off the most.
Some morons who have started being interested in crypto just because they saw 200% a day earnings on some ads on youtube are telling others how stupid it was to spend that many bitcoins on a pizza. Without that sale or without anyone spending their coins at that value BTC would have been still under a cent and none of those critics would have ever heard of it.

To be honest, I didn't think that with pizzas it was something so significant that it should be raised to such a high level of importance, but history is obviously like a good wine, the more time passes, the more you appreciate it. None of us can surpass Laszlo in what he did, but anyone who spent their Bitcoin actively when it was still worth only a few hundred $ may today have some doubts about whether they should have done it.

I have never regretted it, I guess because I consider Bitcoin a currency in the first place, although I admit that it is more than a good store of value.

And they do not seem to understand that, maybe without Laszlo's action at the time, Bitcoin would have never had its first real world transaction.  And maybe Bitcoin would have never been so huge.  It is thanks to these people that Bitcoin became what it is.

Right, and thinking about it now, was it that Papa John's store knew where Bitcoin was headed for them to have accepted it back then as payment or they did do it out of fun? either way, I think it was a nice thing that it happened, and with Bitcoin being what it is today it has become a nice part of Bitcoins history that people can relate to.

Chain restaurants and franchise locations have to abide some really stupid rules sometimes, I'm sure if it was different, the owner of the pizza place would have used this already to promote his business, but since it's a chain and even if you increase the sales 100x the only thing you get is a bonus on xmas maybe they didn't want to spend that much energy on it or they were not even allowed till now.

Who are all these people in the photo?

Since the plaque also writes "Donated by the Jacksonville Bitcoin meetup", I would expect that the people from the picture are Jacksonville bitcoiners, not actual Papa John's staff (which I see in the background working and not caring about the picture being taken).
Ah, well, then everything is clear. Probably, the owners of Papa John's store are not even aware of this meeting, and this plaque is only the result of the guys in the photo's own initiative. Actually, no one will allow to hang a plaque on the wall in the trading floor. The photo with the plaque is cut off on the left and therefore it is not clear whether the plaque is hanging on the wall or not. Or I'm wrong?

I am worried about the drawing on the plaque and I think it is not legible and not distinct. A person who does not know about pizza-day will not understand at all what is depicted there. Even if change the picture, the plaque will still mean nothing to ordinary visitors to this pizzeria. They simply won't understand what the event is about and what it means for the bitcoin community.

I hope my nitpicking isn't taken for toxicity. Smiley

I believe after 100 years, Laszlo Hanyecz's "10,000 Bitcoin Pizza Moment" will be written in history books as something like Alexander Graham Bell's first telephone call made in March 10, 1876, or the Wright Brothers' first controlled flight in a "modern" aircraft in December 17, 1903. We are living under ANOTHER time of ANOTHER fundamental change in human society.

As most users commented it is much needed thing and Papa John's have done it. These incidents will give Laszlo Hanyecz the credit of giving value to bitcoin. Maybe he's having a normal life, but his act have changed many users lives and he'll be remembered throughout. Maybe adding some pizza to the menu with the name of Laszlo Hanyecz will add value. Another thing I wish Laszlo Hanyecz have his own pizza store with bitcoin acceptance which can again be a turning in his life.

This is definitely a good move, it's a memorable place and done something that is insane. 10k bitcoins equal to 200 million dollars these days right? I earn peaked close to 700 million, and to think that someone spent that much on two large pizzas do really feel like a very big dream that would be hard to wake up from. That person is still around and he still lives to know that he spent 200 million on two large pizzas.

And unless he got back right away and bought some more bitcoins to recover that loss, literally the same day, then he would be out a lot of money. Early birds do not realize the bigness of a project they are in, because it is rarely that big after a decade.

Nah, he got those Bitcoins mining in the early days, so he didn't pay directly (other than electricity). In his words it was "Free Pizza".

Also, it was not all the bitcoins he had, so it's all good. Plus, he only paid the market value of the pizzas, maybe a bit more, but something like twenty dollars or so in Bitcoin. He didn't pay 200 million for the pizzas, that's just nonsense.

By your logic, every single purchase you've done in your life after 2009 was a colossal waste of money because you could have bought Bitcoin instead.

I have something in mind like a bronze/wooden plaque with a bitcoin engraved on it and a similar description this one has.

They should also include the hash of the trasaccion which made the purchase of the pizzas possible.  Smiley

Indeed. It's nice to have.

However, I'm on same page with mk4 here: this matters more for bitcoiners than to Papa John's; they've accepted it because, hey, a bit more publicity never hurts, but at the end of the day they're not that much into bitcoin, so, meh.

Bitcoin is still mostly a scam/fad to a lot of people
I don't think it'll ever stop being a scam, a fad, a ponzi - a malicious currency generally - for some people. Acknowledging the benefits of bitcoin requires a strong level of discipline, to realize the broken parts of the current monetary system. It ain't easy to make such hard acceptances.

Especially when nearly the entire world is ruled by politicians, economists, bankers etc., who're supporters of a theory that goes completely against bitcoin; that is, Keynesianism.

Nice to see this great achievement because many people have this opportunity in 2010 but they missed use it in other things but papa John's used it wisely on Bitcoin Pizzas in 2010 that is making people to admired the history. It showed there was a great joy among the teams that was part of the business because everybody in the picture was so filled with happiness, that is Bitcoin can do so many things to humanity.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the US is the country where over 90% of all crypto ATMs are located, they have Coinbase, Grayscale, Microstategy, a very strong mining crypto industry, and Bitcoin is somehow present in most of their mainstream media. I think that people in that country are much more aware that Bitcoin exists than in some other parts of the world.

True. But currently, Bitcoin is still mostly a scam/fad to a lot of people; so I'm not sure if Papa John's wants to give too much attention to the plaque(hence somewhat affiliation with Bitcoin).

^Or maybe I'm overthinking it. idk lol.

Hopefully this will occur to them or someone who can get it done, A bigger one maybe like a sculpture outside perhaps alongside this portable one inside the store will ensure that everyone in Jacksonville recognises Papa John's store as a historic site for bitcoin.

The more persons that get to see it, will get to know more about the famous pizza story and understand that there is a strong culture and history behind bitcoin. Those who are not bitcoin hodlers or hodl no form of crypto will develop an interest from constantly seeing this sculpture, plus those with twisted opinions on the credibility of bitcoins will see that they have been around for a while now.

I would have added a QR code pointing to a webpage describing what happened and why it was so relevant thou.

I think we all agree that it would be nice if they added a little more detail, because the average visitor probably won't know what it's about. That pizzeria could make much better use of the event for promotional purposes, although they may be doing well without it, given that fast food has a cult status in the US, although the rest of the world is not far behind.

I'm guessing that the masses still don't give a crap for now anyway so this will do. They can have a better plaque in the future when more people actually care about them being affiliated with Bitcoin.
