I can definitely see how the progression from using computers, from desktop, to laptop, to tablet and now our phones (most of which are powerful computers as well) has created a shift with an increasing number of people requiring corrective lenses due to 'acquired', rather than 'inherited' myopia. Likely, if practiced regularly it can only be good to take more breaks and intentionally focus away, so on longer distances and if not just across the room -- take a walk and enjoy the landscape and surroundings outside for a bit and focus on something across the street.
Well the exception is the mention of writing in your first sentence. With nearsightedness, or myopia, one can see good up close as in for reading and writing, including doing work on the computer and your cell phone; all of which are the opposite for the farsighted person who will need corrective lenses for doing these tasks.
