I don't get how me holding it is going to benefit me. Anybody wanting to set up a vote can just clone it and use it, why the need for the existing chain?

There may be clones, but will they be trusted? The official chain will be trusted more than subsequent chains for the same exact reasons we see such a high level of trust in bitcoin as compared to other (potentially "better") altcoins.
As for the project...it makes me so happy to see that for the first time in human history we will likely be able to vote in elections that are completely auditable in an open-source way. This is literally making history. EVEN IF I do not make money off of this DAC, I will lay on my death bed knowing that at least I took a part in changing the world in ways that very few will ever get the chance to understand.
We crypto-advocates will understand though
