I couldn't even imagine how expensive those domains would be, epecially for pre-registrations as a lot of people would definitely fight for a bitcoin.tld domain.

Nah, .forum would still come around $50-$70 max.  Of course, the bitcoin.forum name could attract a fair bit of attention; but, when bitcointalk.org has been operating as the "Bitcoin Forum", there's the priority.  Same goes for bitcointalk.forum.
Prices will still depend on who is selling it and I don't think that bitcointlalk would be that cheap as a lot will take advantage of the prices. Due to trademarks and brand name competition big companies such as Google, Apple, Yahoo will always buy off similarly sounding and looking names near to them just not to be associated with their company, brand names are worth a fortune some even use their brand names as collateral that is how it is valuable as it is really worth money to them and other people can make a fortune out of it.

With domain brokers, you can be sure those domain names will be sold at a very high price as soon as possible. I don't think Bitcointalk.org needs another extension. The forum is old enough and well referenced in SERP and recognized. A company usually buy all the extensions available to protect its brand.

That's what's done by the big ones like Google, Facebook, Apple, et al.
Those brands are on a different field/category & level + they have other reasons for purchasing domains...

So i think theymos should buy the name related so that future should be safe.
Given the nature of this forum [1], I don't think theymos will reserve/purchase those domains.

On a side note, there are other options when dealing with similar cases (based on this blog):
  • UDNDRP
  • ACPA

This premium domains can be used for good and bad also, just like if anyone is holding bitcointalk.forum domain
then any scammer can buy and make a duplicate copy of bitcointalk.org and scam the users and get the full details of them and use it on bitcointalk.org site. So i think theymos should buy the name related so that future should be safe.

Yea, I'm not talking about the .forum TLD. I was referring to the "bitcoin" domain. Domain sites ask for a fortune on "bitcoin" domains, even with the slightly crappy ones:

But yeah, it depends on the domain seller.

I don't know what theymos would possibly be doing with those domains though.

If only to block someone from squatting on that premium name.  Newcomers might confuse one with the other, so best to stay safe by owning the domains that matter.  That's what's done by the big ones like Google, Facebook, Apple, et al.

In case you haven't come across this bit of information earlier, the .forum domain is opening up for registration. Several registrars are already accepting pre-registration for free.

Of course, bitcointalk.org has it's own brand identity built up over the years; but it'd make sense to hold on to bitcoin.forum and bitcointalk.forum. btw, another .talk tld is about to come on the scene, so you can reserve bitcoin.talk as well, when that happens!
