I think the reason why we stick to 50 BTC is because a promise was made to donators in the past.
This maybe a bitcoin forum, but there are a lot of things which are not denominated in bitcoin, including bug bounties.
Yes. This question was asked quite a few times and theymos has stated that he would not lower the amount required for existing tiers. This is it (unless he has changed his stance, which I doubt).

This seems silly to me. Especially without a rationale to back it. Just saying.

That being said, I'm OK with the fact that usernames just can't be changed.
Wrong. 50 BTC is 50 BTC, regardless of it's value in another currency. This is a Bitcoin forum, and I sometimes don't understand when people obsess with the value in another currency. If we lower it now, then we are dishonoring everyone who has donated in the past.

I prefer not to denominate values in any single country's currency here, but BTC is too unstable. XAU is pretty stable.

I requested a name change once but Theymos never responded. My previous account got hacked during the 2013 hack. I made this account to prove the ownership of my previous account. I provided a lot of evidence, including a signed message, but I never got me previous account back. Now I'm stuck with this silly username Sad

With your way of thinking, there is absolutely no way bitcoin could be anything else than a perpetual store of value, any spending of it would be deemed to be considered a huge loss in the future. And the fact that it would be so defeats its purpose, therefore its value, resulting in a paradox IMHO. I'd be interested reading your way of refuting this paradox.
This is off-topic and would require more brain power than I have to spare right now in order to discuss. This way of thinking applies only to the this particular matter (ranks; not in general).

I have a good reason. I want to change my username because I want to match it up with my current avatar and I will not change my avatar ever. Smiley
What are the names of the lower tiers?
That is a bad reason and a waste of his time (unless he has extra time to spend). There are now lower tiers aside of Donator ATM, he did say he would consider it.

The same offence is happening to the customers who have already paid 2 BTC or more for one cup of coffee. Will they go back tomorrow and file a dispute as they have paid much more?
You are comparing a drink that will get consumed pretty quickly to a forum rank which will be eternal (until you die or the forum dies). The comparison is quite bad.

You need to match up with the current situation. I did not want to offend you but this is my suggestion. Smiley
"You"(admins) don't "need" to , its theymos' decision and not a "democracy", he decides what goes. Donations, even though are appreciated, aren't that necessary, Ad revenues provide a regular stream of BTCs.
Correct. Nobody has to do anything. Sometimes it is very hard even for the staff members to have a influence on his decisions. He ultimately makes the decisions as I've said.

Changing names just for fun, yup real good reason /sarcasm
What are the names of the lower tiers?
Currently its only Donator(10 BTC) and VIP(50 BTC). Donators however , can't change their names.

Invalid comparison, how is this in any way related to the forum?

That does not matter at all. An admin should not waste their already very limited time on random requests. If there was a good reason behind it, you might get lucky. Otherwise forget about it.

It's not his mistake. It costs 50 BTC, end of story.  Theymos has said that he will not be lowering the required amount but might introduce lower tiers IIRC.

There is harm and I would feel offended if I had donated at the time. If you are comparing the price now, then consider how much potential USD value they have lost with that 50 BTC donation to get a rank that you can now acquire for much lower.

Technically there is no right and wrong here since this is a subjective discussion. Ultimately theymos decides and I am strongly against lowering the required amount.

But I think there is no username with "Donkey Kong". Can you point it out please? If there is such username then I'll surely close this thread. Smiley BTW, I think scammers can always scam with any username so there is no point that I'll become a scammer if I change my username and I won't become a scammer if I don't change my username. I think you got my point. Let's see what theymos says.

In other words, imagine that a member spends 50BTC on bitcointalk back in 2010 when it started, then buys back the 50BTC at market rate. Why would it be a question of "honor" if the forum decided to lower the fee in 2015? If the VIP didn't care to buy back the 50BTC back in 2010, that's his mistake, not the forum's or its future members', isn't it?

I think you are wrong again! We always look for value not the numbers. Worth of 50 BTC in 2010 is definitely not same as in 2015. So if admin decrease the donation amount, there will be no harm done. This will never discourage previous members as the price equivalent is same. The value is same. Otherwise you'll have to buy a pizza at 50BTC now if you had bought one in 2019 at that price.

50 BTC! OMG! Huh Are you serious really? Please consider them for a discount. Paying 50 BTC should have been possible in early 2010. Cry
Yes, 50 BTC. The price should not be adjusted and it will always be the same. The USD equivalent is a pointless measure.

BTW, why is it restricted here? Is changing a name really bad? I have been on other forums and I'm easily able to change my username and also the previous username histories are shown! Please tell theymos to help me out! Sad
Because of various problems, like impersonation, scamming, etc. Theymos will definitely not answer your call for help as the username change is requested without a proper reason.

I think you are trying to tell that no same usernames are allowed. But I think there is no username with "Donkey Kong". Can you point it out please? Well I sometimes don't understand when people obsess with Bitcoin being disconnected from the real world. If we agree that a currency should be a universal, liquid mean of exchange of wealth between people, when making a donation to the forum, the fact that the forum will hold it as BTC or exchange it on the spot (like if they were using Bitpay) shouldn't be that much of a concern to you.

As for what the amount is worth, after a transaction has been made, it's a bit silly to look back. Think of the 10KBTC pizza. Some people see it as a stupid act. But others don't, and I belong to them. If you want to look into the past, then do it right. If the pizza guy buys back the 10KBTC at market rate just after paying for his pizza, then do you still think it's stupid?

In other words, imagine that a member spends 50BTC on bitcointalk back in 2010 when it started, then buys back the 50BTC at market rate. Do you really think admins are going to waste their time even viewing this thread? Sorry to interrupt your dreams, its just not some common forum where admins beg you to come register and will do anything for you.
Staff have a feature to change their name(display name, username remains the same), Blazed did it in the past even though he wasn't a staff, it was only because he was on "good terms" with old man theymos
Edit: If you really want to have that name change feature, become a VIP by donating 50 BTC and then change your name as many times as possible.

I want to change my current username to "Donkey Kong" permanently. I have seen Mitchełł changed his username from Bitcoininformation. Although he's a staff but can it be done for me? That will fully represent my current avatar also. So please consider this earnest request. Smiley
