Why not using the signing function at brainwallet.org?
Both the sender and the recipient can create and verify message signatures.

But I don't think the signing/verifying is the same as in Bitcoin-qt, so a message signed by Armory can't be verified by Bitcoin-qt and vice-versa.

Armory can do that. But its a fat wallet ;p
with signmessage command.

Which of the thin wallet clients (those which don't need to download whole 7+ GB blockchain) do support message signing? I have tried Multibit so far and it doesn't...
