You don't have to use google search engine to find the tokens network address it's not safe, you should visit the project website or add their telegram group then ask them this question, they will eagerly drop you the information you need, to add Polygon chain you can visit their website too or Polygon scan, you will see add network at the bottom right of the screen.

With my profile rank I still feel somehow asking this type of question, but I guess one can't know it all..
Ask away anything that doubts you, it's better that way than forcing it and then end up making a mistake.

Is it safe to go on google search and type " how to add polygon to metamask"? I ask this because this days you can only stay one step ahead of scammers if you are getting information fast.

Are there no scam adding network to metamask yet?

Is there no way scammers are already using fake RPC URL to scam people? I need to ask.

Also do you have any solid genuine link where all chain data can be copy and past into Metamask instead of searching then through the web?.
As long as you know the right links then you are safe. You can also use the padlock icon in your browser to determine the security of the site where you will get the RPC.
There are ways to fake the RPC but I don't think it could lead to a hack. I haven't bumped into a situation like that or read an experience from other users that they were hacked by that kind of scheme.
Just avoid sign ups whenever they are asking, information should be free if you are just copy pasting.

You can search for information such as the question you asked but you have to be careful to follow it and can look for comparisons from other articles so you know whether the article really provides the right information or wants to deceive you.

It would be even better to visit the original website to get valid information about using the app. And it will not fool you by reading from other articles. You need to search properly and it looks like you can also look for information from this forum because many of those developers have joined here so you can get many answers that will satisfy you.

There are activities, IMO that can make one vulnerable to attack: (1) Interacting with fake/malicious tokens. This is one new thing in the crypto space that is really bad and very disturbing. If you observe carefully, you notice that there are fake tokens that have the same symbol as the original one. It is very important to cross-check the contract address of the original token from their website. Failure to do this, you may find yourself interacting with a fake token. The bad thing is that, the fake token may have been programmed to empty your real tokens or perhaps collect other vital data. (2) Giving out your seed phrase for whatever reason. I have participated in an airdrop that they initially gave out the locked tokens to be unlocked at a fixed date. When the date approached, they did not unlock the token and the only way out according to them is to sell  your wallet/give them the your seed phrase so as to give you the equivalent ( about $245) worth of the airdrop token. On the telegram chat of that token, the admin requests that you DM them for ways to receive your airdrop. Even though you may have to sell you wallet, I find it very disturbing - I guess they may have access to your future wallet especially if you are using metamask on the same phone or PC.

This means that some newly launched tokens can be malicious especially if you are to receive the airdrop/buy the token using DApps. That is, connecting your wallet to their website to receive your tokens. Another thing is that such tokens don't ever talk about listing in Centralized Exchanges (CEX). In fact, they avoid listing in CEX. Currently, I am learning more about rpc and the risks.

It's safe and why not? The problem is once you are entering the incorrect site, i meant as long as you are only typing it in the google search and there would be no any problem with it.

Did you meant a network specifically being created by scammer for the scamming purpose? People can know that easily even by seeing it.

Is there no way scammers are already using fake RPC URL to scam people? I need to ask.
Fake RPC can be created but people can know that easily. that's why you shall always use official RPC that being listed in the legit site like an official site.

Just go to the github or wiki that created by the developers just like this https://wiki.polygon.technology/docs/develop/metamask/config-polygon-on-metamask/

Technically safe if you understand well what you are doing. I know you are lurking on the internet for years, I'm sure you are using common sense at some point.

Besides, from the example you have given, it's impossible for me that you will lost on the way by reading those results in a Google search.

More importantly, just make sure that you don't dump or shared your private keys elsewhere.

If you haven't seen it yet, I've made a thread entitled: Beware of fake Coinmarketcap!
And that has something to do with your question about searching through search engines like Google. It is very likely that you'll see some fake results at the top of your search and they'll be labeled as sponsored ads. And those are the phishing links that might be connected to the keywords that you'll search like that question of connecting or adding polygon to metamask. I guess this will it clear to you that it's very unsafe if you'll search for some crypto related stuff on Google and you need to be vigilant and aware of clicking the wrong links.

In fact, the scammers are still doing this, making some phishing sites and also providing certain links to phishing in Google searches. We cannot deny that the risk is very high to always only use Google to search to do something and do action. However, if we are looking for the information about ways to do something.

Even if you are browsing the information using Google search, I will also not suggest you follow the steps directly. You can go to the official websites, and search information over there. COmmonly, certain platforms will always provide articles about their tutorials on their platform.

ALternatively, you can search the information on trusted and reputable websites and YouTube channels, and sometimes, you can find the information much better and more trusted. However, if you need to click certain links, always check recheck the link itself, even there are back ;inks or not. If the link issuspicious, it is better not to clikc the link to decrease the risks.

In any case, you should only use information from the official website. As for adding networks to Metamask, use https://chainlist.org, it contains a list of all EVM networks, including test ones. Usage Chainlist.org allows you to add any network in a few seconds.

No, it's just safe to used Google and search for anything related to crypto as there are a lot of scammers in their. You can only get one step of the game from cyber actors if you will get disconnected from the internet if you are executing it.

Maybe the best resource is Metamask itself. And if something is not clear, you can ask the community as there could be experts around that can give you the correct answer.

Most of this scam add network, probably for a help website who a setup network for you.

If you using a service who provided the network RPC, there has some chance scammer created a scam site for this one. So, in my opinion is better to visit coin-provider and get the official resource from there.

Rather than "Google" we all know google are not monitored their ads, so there has some chance the scam site on the top using "google ads".

yes, you can use https://chainlist.org/

Almost all EVM networks are available on this website, you just have to follow the steps given below.

1) search the EVM network that you want to add to your wallet.
2) Click "Connect Wallet"
3) click " Add to metamask"

After this, your metamask wallet will ask permission to add the network to your wallet, you have to respond with "ALLOW" done.

It is never a shame to ask a question even if your rank is high, I regularly use google if I have questions about crypto or on things I forgot to do. I'm sure that there aren't anyone here knows everything about cryptocurrency or how other new applications work. I know that you are just being careful with scammers, The important thing you need to do when researching is to verify the information that you found out. There are several credible website out there and there are also the company website which is metamask on your case that offers the tutorial to how to add Polygon. There are many trusted members here but I suggest to just copy straight from metamask website itself, Just Be careful of the clone websites though it is easy to know if the website you are browsing is legit.

Usually, the top of the list in google searches is the most clicked and I doubt a phishing website will be there in a blink.
So I would not worry about that unless you are signing up. Don't do that.
RPCs are easy to find, as Binance academy also helps.
https://academy.binance.com/en/articles/how-to-add-polygon-to-metamask
Just like how you added Binance Smart Chain in Metamask, it's almost the same way.

Don't worry about asking, it should be a normal thing in a forum.

Even if it exists, I think the effect would be minimal. And far more scammers are using more proven scam schemes like phishing sites asking for seed phrases, scam smart contracts, etc since some people are still getting scammed by that method.

A truly genuine method is seriously to run your own RPC node! Since you verify and interact with the blockchain with your own node.

But if you won't bother to do that, it would be the best option to choose the RPC link from the official source of the cryptocurrency site.  Take a look over https://docs.bnbchain.org/docs/getting-started/#node-rpc and https://polygon.technology/, there is information about the available public RPCs data.

I normally find the most popular dex of a network and use that to input my settings.

It's possible you could connect to a scam network and buy fake tokens and may be something that gets used by you can't sign a transaction on polygon and have it broadcast to go somewhere else once you've signed it without your wallet/computer being more compromised too - which is harder to achieve.

I've never heard of any hacks using a manual Network URL, the highest that could happen is creating a fake Matic token and the Network URL will be different, to scam with this you need to fool buyers that its the real MATIC. And since MATIC is available on big exchanges you will only see the fake on Dex that are Polygon chain compatible.

I have polygon mainnet running on my Metamask, here is the detail

Network name: Polygon Mainnet
Network URL: https://polygon-rpc.com/
Chain ID: 137
Currency Symbol: MATIC
Block Explorer URL: https://polygonscan.com

I need to ask.

I am not sure what you're asking. If this is only about altcoins, then please move it to the appropriate board. Else, it's simple: get a hardware wallet, stay away of shitcoins (and metamask) and you should be just fine, especially if you are careful what websites you're visiting and what software you install / run.
