Very beautiful article and although explanation is not 100% accurate it gives indication why gambling can make you addicted to it.

I think these study also find the end result which we guys do. People have a tendency to win and win only, if they see something yellow shinning they call it gold Tongue , like that when they see some huge odds ahead of them, they fall for it and that's the basic reason behind any addiction.
You are right. People should understand that they cannot win every bet they make. I think the study explains good too, but well, when you dont have good suggestions to avoid gambling, its pretty useless for such a study.

Gambling addiction is perfectly explained here, new gamblers would find it quite easy to leave addiction if they read such things. But gamblers like me who have been too old now in this addiction are hard to be told such things.

For beginners, i think it's important to note the Gambler's Fallacy. Look it up on Wiki. Well if you think about it, this mentality is what lured people to continue to play. Good play by Casinos because this is what they used to get you hooked.
Very correct, anyone who has recently started to gamble should check it for sure. I think people should understand that gambling sites are designed in such a way that they wont loose, basically because they have bigger bankroll then yours.

I call this addiction 'the dangling carrot on a stick' type because getting the incentive in front of you ( the jackpot) makes you spend more and more money. Actually a lot of companies specializing in free to play games with microtransactions employ psychologists who help create the addicting schemes in the gameplay which are focused on you spending more cash for obtaining that in-game goal. 'Nickle and dime you to death' is just preying on peoples' addiction too.

Good read, such a fine line between fun and going to far
Yes there is a very fine line between going mad and being sensible too. Gamblers often get mad while playing and they loose all money, while if they can remain in their senses in bad situations they would profit much more.

It explains quite nicely, I wont call this the best of explanation or review about gambling addiction but yes they have got the point why actually gambling makes you feel addicted.

people expect do more for their gambling result and everyday hoping that they will win big from gambling and without they realized they are already become addicting because gambling already affecting their mind i think this is one of the risk if someone did to much gambling in their lives

Yeah it's safe to say that a regular gambler is an addicted gambler. Since there is consistency. It's wrong I know, but inevitable if there is a pattern in your gambling.
Regularity becomes addiction.

what ever study or books , no one can change the mentality of the gamblers , everyone knows that on long term will be in loss then also on a small hope they just do gambling, telling advice is very good but following it is hard.

I used to gamble a lot in the past, even tho I have always been a casual, for fun gambler, but the study nonetheless explains how it works, I know that a true addict is very hard to recover, but not impossible tho, with professional treatment it can be done.
Not even with a professional treatment, you just need to understand it properly and completely. You cant just stop it because you feel so, you have to be 100% sure and confident of leaving it.

Some people are just bored with their lives and then they need some entertainment that gives them hope and a adrenaline rush. This is why some people jump from bridges with ropes tied to their

legs. { One for the entertainments and two for the rush it gives them } I see this like a hamster in a wheel... You running round and round, thinking that at some time you will reach the end. We work

every day, hoping to become financially independent, but when we get close to that, we buy bigger cars and bigger houses, and then we start running in the wheel again.  Roll Eyes Some runners even get

addicted to running, because it releases some "feel good" chemicals when you exercise and you get addicted to those feelings.

What I find difficult is, why do old people make up the majority of people who visit casinos?

This study explains nothing but is quite basic which anyone can explain actually. I think gambling is not a disease which cant be treated, if you cure gambling addiction with proper treatment, it would work and you will leave it quite easily.

I read through that article and thought it was pretty interesting, but what's the most intriguing part of the experiment is the part when they changed the gambling button system. With having both the red and green lights be reflective of the gamble, you remove the satisfying moment of "winning" a gamble and getting the jackpot. It's unpredictable as to whether you've won or not until you wait for the result. I believe casino owners already know this, as they use indicators to show whether you win or lose (typically that red for a loss, and green for winning). It can also talk about how people want an instant result for whether they've won or not, which makes sense as to why online gambling is so popular.

I know on Primedice there was a script that made everything green, but I personally felt that it was not as satisfying as having green be rarer. That is the *hook* of gambling, then.

what forces us to play is the human nature of us hating to lose. Just like with the stock
market people just keep buying as their losing cause they dont want to see those red numbers.

It makes people chase and even lose more

But we should understand that, in stock market if you keep on buying good company shares over the time you may make some profits. But in gambling instantly one will be losing all money and as we all know gambling is not for making profit but it was created for fun and entertainment. We all are misusing it for free and fast money.

I do not believe any of these kind of studies, since I already know why gambling ruins and the basic logic behind any addiction is - You feel too good when you do it and you feel bad and alone when you dont do it. I think such addiction can run your whole life if you dont stop on time.

I just read it, they seems right. They first compared us to the pigeon, well the example was a good one. I think gambling also gives us addiction because when we win, we want to win more and when we loose, we want to recover our loss and  get in profit. So better do not do it is a best choice.

The article was a very interesting one, and I really liked it. I was pretty surprised by the study results, and I was expecting the pigeons would go for the 100% chance one instead, but I guess the pigeons wanted a chance for more  Wink It's very true that people most people are like that, but some (including me) aren't like that.

Well it differs in each people such as people who lose at their first bet then didn't want to lose again so they quit gambling
That is true, but most people (I think) are more greedy/risky people.

There are support groups and maybe they have helped changed some gamblers. Many gamblers like that don't know when to quit however.

I liked the article (specially the last few parts). The idea of earning more on this way with a split second decisions is what makes those in need of instant money more addicted to gambling than those aren't and as result they keep on risking more money in which there's always a loss as well, but some never learn their lesson and just continue and make the streak even longer.

I think this study is a great way to see gambling addiction for what it really is: Just the hope of a different outcome that will be positive next time.
So just like pigeons press the buttons hoping for food all day, you press the buttons hoping for that jackpot.
The people that cannot control this and know when to stop are the people that are addicted to forever wanting one more spin, therefore going broke and not enjoying gambling for what it should be: just a game.
