The FirePro V7900 gently sips 135W MAX and runs cooler, is single slot so high density is a plus, also you can downclock the RAM, it also now only costs 700$...

in my opinion the power/heat savings are worth it over the bullshit that is the 6990 hopping along at 130w..IDLE 475W under load for a ton of heat and 2 slots.

Dang.

I'm pretty sure a $1000 card with slightly more SPs than a 6870 will never make sense for mining.
they really should.
I mean, look around, most places are sold out of 5850 and higher end cards.
AMD will going to see shipments of its GPU rise sharply in the coming quarter.

if you need something "better" for mining- vait for 32nm/28nm AMD 79xx GPU's. hope, they switch back to VLIW5 atch from 58xx, backed by 69xx rendering back-end[further upscaled/updated, probably] with higher clocks/shaders count.

By the time anything new is available on the market, the difficulty will be a few (or more) times higher and any gains will be all but lost. And then many will upgrade to the 79xx series and difficulty will go up again.
"by the time" its pointless whatever you choose, because next complexity gap is few days away.
whatever you order, its too late for mining[plus devivery time to EtA].

OpenCL 1.1 support for this Cayman-based GPU and similar performance in OpenCL thus.  350MH/s or about.
90% price - higher-quality drivers for CAD/CAE/CASE Software and [slightly]tuned fimrware.
less performance in Games of both API's[both because less CPU saturation and focus on IQ&reliability. rather than performance in games] and no OpenCL support for weaker cards.

Perhaps not...

It's just a listing that shows newegg is sold out of these high end video cards. Gamers with lots of cash to burn buy top-end products out of stock all the time

it'd be sweet if AMD would put together a V7900 designed just for mining: low RAM, no Eyefinity support, one video output, etc.  a real strippo.  how tough could it be?

i know they're quite aware of us - i wonder if they have any plans to cater to the market we represent...

How do you know they're aware of us?

And once those are able to be found used, they'll be a much better deal. For high density mining, those are pretty sweet cards- same power as a 700 USD 6990, with far less power output?

you're kidding, right?  "How do you know they're aware of us?" Huh

as for the hashing power - 1280 stream processors.  so probably somewhere a bit better than a 6870 - like 350-400 Mh/s - no?  but still; an MSI five PCIe-slot motherboard fully populated could be around 2 Gh/s.

AMD has announced a new Cayman-based card for workstations - the V7900 - with a single-slot design, 150W power draw, and 1280 stream processors. I'm wondering how people think it will be for hashing? The price seems pretty good at $999 and the single-slot design and low power draw seem like it could make it quite popular for mining.
