Good news. I received the following response from Threema:

Hello,

due to popular demand, we're planning a distribution method without
Google Play, most likely through our web site and with PayPal and
Bitcoin payment. Please check our website again in a few weeks. Thank
you for your interest!

Best Regards,

Threema Support

Sounds great to see hopefully some more vendor acceptance!  (However I myself would probably not use it, because I only want to run free software (as in freedom) on my phone.)

+1 for this. I would like to buy the app as well, so I sent them feedback similar to what Mike posted:

After the NSA spying revelations, many of my friends are migrating from Skype to other communications solutions. A number of them have installed Threema, and encouraged me to do so, too.

However, due to various reasons, I am unable to buy your application using Google Wallet.

Please consider alternative solutions for allowing customers to purchase your application, in particular Bitcoin which is increasingly being used by savvy techies, such as yours truly, to transact privately on the Internet.

Thank you for your consideration.

Hello,

Threema is great but there is one major problem. People who cannot use the Google Play Store -- for example because they don't have access to the traditional banking system or because they cannot afford to have their purchase of the app linked to their real-world identity (e.g. journalists in war zones, whistleblowers, etc.) -- cannot use Threema.

It would be great if Threema were to adopt Bitcoin as a means of payment. If you wish, I could volunteer some insight into the technical side of how to do this.

Peace,
Mike Gogulski

Threema is a secure end-to-end encrypted private messaging service.
Unfortunately, one needs to buy and PAY it from the respective stores, which funks with the aspect of privacy and anonymity altogether.

I kindly ask the community to make their presence known on https://threema.ch/en/support/

so here goes:

Dear Threema devs,

I have bought into (pun intended) your effort to promote safer communication on the Google Play Store.
However, to promote the aspect of anonymity, I would like to ask you to consider accepting BITCOIN as a means to purchase a license outside of the Play Store for Android.

You have no doubt heard of Bitcoin - please try to take advantage of the willingness of the community to support Bitcoin-related security projects!

Cheers!
