I think there will only be 1 successful cryptocurrency and that will be Bitcoin. I don't see how any others will offer anything which knocks them from this position. IMO a VHS/Betamax scenario.

I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket..
get some bitcoins, but invest in some altcoins as well.
YES, btc are the most popular and everything, but when btc crashes or when the difficulty rises extremely, altcoins like ppcoin, litecoin namecoin etc might be very useful.
The other eggs should be non-virtual currency stuff.
If Bitcoin dies all other cryptocurrencies will also be in big trouble due to the loss of trust in them, unless there is one that outshines Bitcoin abilities and therefore replaces it (which there isn't atm).
If you have a lot of knowlegde about the topic you may put your bet on some niche altcoins, but it's defintely nothing to recommend a newbie.

Stick with Bitcoins, if you are new.
Learn more about the how the Bitcoin system works and what Altcoins do different before investing in any of them.

It all depends on profitability of a coin and it changes frequently. Sometimes you have few days windows to buy even some rare altcoins (HydroduperMegaSuper Coin) and make a good profit. Better than BTC/LTC.

BTC kinda reached its peak and is gradually coming back...LTC is waiting it's debut on Mt Gox, that could result in interesting price movement...I am personally into LTC and exchanging to BTC when needed.

safest bet is to invest in bitcoin, and bitcoin only, if you're new. IMO.

hi, i'm new to this... i'm quite interested in the bitcoin space, but wonder how far litecoin is from it all...

any thoughts?

Litecoin isn't better than Bitcoin. Bitcoin is far more better due it being developed properly etc.
