If you want to mine Bitcoin you need a huge machine. If you want to mine other currencies you can get started with a home computer straight away. If you have no experience at all how to mine then I suggest trying out minergate to get familiar with mining. But if you want to mine to make a decent profit then you need a 1500+ euro rig and mining Bitcoin you need even more. Currently, it's not really profitable to mine anymore because everyone is jumping on the same ship. I sold mining GPUs 1 month ago since it was getting harder every single week.

It depends on what kind of cryptocurrency you are going to mine. For different altkoins need different configurations and video cards.

To answer the OP simply, any machine will do for mining, but of course, there are now specialized rigs with many PCIE slots, for which to attach the GPUs. As with mining, it all depends on your budget, the more better the rig, the more coin you will make, take into consideration electricity and other costs. There are many guides on the internet for setting up mining rigs.
