I saw a video promoting kids to run away from the ang pao, I don't know if that has always been a thing or this was due to the fear of Corona-chan corrupting the kids.
Also, why do I feel that you dislike these relatives of yours? LOL. Anyway celebrations should be over by now, I hope you at least enjoyed the food.

That’s hilarious, btw it’s not common to use physical red envelope anymore since the digital money has gone mainstream. Try running away from a digital red envelope send by the internet, there is no way to run from it. The cuisine is fantastic, my favourite would have been the meat jerky that’s specially prepared by obscure chef, I’d crave into it all the time.

Belated Happy Lunar New Year and I hope the NCoV didn't rained on you party too much. I understand the "pain".
Not just New Year's but pretty much every large annual gathering goes like this . It's basically a way for relatives to keep tabs on each other's current social/economic standing, whether someone's lagging (in which case you get "advise") or leaving them behind (in which case they'll simmer quietly while "being happy" for you LOL).

The thing is getting too ridiculous when we begin to see both young boy and girl avoiding it like a plague, boy hiring freelance to impress on the party, or girl hiring boy to pretend the the relationship. The entire scene look faking just to impress, they’ll even fake their wealth status by spending on cars and dressing up in a gentlemen
/lady suit. What’s the point to trying so hard. Certainly I wouldn’t hope the same goes for Christmas.

I am not of the Chinese ancestry though I am Asian too. Here in my county, the Chinese culture is quite a pervasive one since they are dominating the business scene, holding a great percentage of our country's capital and wealth. We generally admire the Chinese culture because they are very entrepreneurial, and they know what they want and are so willing to sacrifice a lot just to get there, many of the traits that we also want to have. I and my family are not so familiar with the Chinese New Year because we are not celebrating it, but we are always aware of this festival because they are always mentioned in the mainstream and social media every year. Sadly, we have this false idea that doing what Chinese are doing can also be bringing luck to our side when in fact we usually do not understand the traits and the sacrifice that Chinese businessmen/women are putting up to be successful.

I’m certain the mainstream is misleading the celebration, it is used to be nothing more than gambling and feasting, but thing changed when mainstream new start making many additions into the mix, it soon become a time to impress other people with their social status, I think it the day for the wealthy to assert their domination into the masses. And it soon followed by all the non sense comparison that craved by the sjw badly.

LOL, I guess that pretty much some up everything if you are going to a family reunion and you have nothing to show-off.
Been there myself, but I was not affected by it, I just take everyone's advise and get out and build my own future. Anyways, belated Chinese New year, and btw, it doesn't have any significant effect on the market price.
===
Exactly, you’ll have been humiliated to have nothing to show off. That’s not a party for the faint heart, especially for the young mind who have nothing but to start their empire from scratch, no reason to boggle your mind over the non sense advices toss at you.
