An explanation of the payment methods (DGM / PPS / PPLNS / Proportional) would be useful for new miners as well.  Not a huge paper like Meni's, but just a brief description of how it works and if its subject to variance or hoppable.
Well there's https://bitcoil.co.il/pool_summary.pdf.

I was going to ask you about that ... Smiley

I'm not sure who removed the stickies. It's better if someone would PM the local moderators(DiabloD3, gmaxwell, MiningBuddy), and ask why. I could sticky a post containing the Top Ten Pools though.

If he's willing to do it, I'd love to see a pool sticky thread managed by organofcorti, since he is already preparing charts for the top pools on a weekly basis.  The first post could be a basic listing of pools with only the minor details (Fee + Payment Method(s)), sorted by speed, or alphabetically with clickable links to their threads, and the second post updated for the current week speed charts?
seconded Smiley

I'd be happy to do this - it's not much extra work, and I like eleuthria's idea of having clickable links. Any other ideas about how best to present the information in the first post, or what information miners and pool ops would like to have presented there?

I think the a basic listing (Payment Method + Fee) is the "best" way to handle it in a neutral manner.  Every pool has it's own unique flavor, so keeping the list "clean" and making it easy for them to find the main pool posts (which have far more detail) keeps it simple and unbiased.  An explanation of the payment methods (DGM / PPS / PPLNS / Proportional) would be useful for new miners as well.  Not a huge paper like Meni's, but just a brief description of how it works and if its subject to variance or hoppable.
Great! Please PM me the link to the thread once you've completed it (just to prevent me from forgetting this) - I'll sticky it then.

Good oh. I'll get started.

Graet,
How about putting a forum link on the web page?  That way we don't need to search through the pools forum at all.
Just a thought,

I would like to see a forum thread with ONLY pools in it.  These extraneous topic's are very distracting and should be separate from pools since the pool forums are mainly for pool information and support.  Then being stickied wouldn't be necessary.
Sam

You'd prefer one board for pools and one board for pool related subjects?

Yep, or a Pool only board with a child board for general pool discussion/subjects.

Great for smaller pools, but generally it means the pools at the top are the ones that are having technical issues.  Stable pools really don't get many posts, so can end up off the first page entirely.
This is also my thought
So we need to do a daily "everything is running fine , no known issues" post to bump the thread Tongue

A top 10 sticky or a child board with all pools stickied are both great options.  I liked the original stickies because pools really don't advertise, so new members coming in basically just see the top few posts here.  Great for smaller pools, but generally it means the pools at the top are the ones that are having technical issues.  Stable pools really don't get many posts, so can end up off the first page entirely.

I like this idea too, especially if it is kept to pools that mine on their own bitcoinds and not "proxy services"

Along with organofcorti I update the Top Ten Pools on http://www.btcmu.info every week. Organofcorti has the most in depth look at Pool performance each week.

If the Top 10 pools aren't going to be stickied, then we need a Top 10 pools post stickied.

If an admin would sticky it, I'd vote for a post with your weekly statistics. But without all the discussion and new post every week - just one post edited for each update. Could still have graphs. Short and informational. Smiley

I'm only posting the table in the weekly pool stats here now - the full posts are at http://organofcorti.blogspot.com. I can put much higher res graphs there, and wknight has them on http://www.btcmu.info as well.

A locked sticky with an introduction and the hashrate table might be useful, and might also encourage some pools to publish better stats too.
