The Devils were busy ahead of last Friday’s Trade Deadline as they shipped out forward Tyler Toffolo to the Jets yet weren’t completely sellers as they also acquired goaltenders Jake Allen from Montreal and Kaapo Kakhonen from San Jose.

Toffoli’s efforts in New Jersey — 26 goals and 44 points in 61 games — since he was traded there from Calgary over the summer didn’t have the desired impact given the Devils’ overall struggles. He is also a pending unrestricted free agent this summer, so it was smart for New Jersey to ship him out. The Jets sent the Devils a third-round draft pick in 2024 and a second-rounder in 2025. New Jersey retained 50% of Toffoli’s salary in the deal.
