Yes, Bitcoin could theoretically run with any type of communication system, even physical mail, with everyone calculating blocks via slipsticks. However, such systems would greatly compromise network security and trust. Probably to a point that Bitcoin itself would be moot.

Have fun manually recording 50 transactions per minute and keeping an up to date ledger with 200,000 addresses...by mail. The window for double spends would be 4-7 days.  Roll Eyes

I would go so far as to say "definitely."

Would it be cool if we had HAM operators runing automated SPV bitcoin nodes that broadcast in loop every last N blocks. Could be done with speech synthesis and AFAIK it does not violate HAM license since the broadcast data is in fact public.

IANAHam, but aren't there data modes that could potentially be used to transmit regular Bitcoin traffic?  The Internet as we know it could be obliterated, but Bitcoin could keep running over long-distance radio links.

Bitcoin is coming out of underground as we speak.

I don't think the aim of Bitcoin is to be completely underground.  The more widespread it's adoption the safer the network becomes, most of the attacks against it today in the media use the tired old line of "it's all criminals."  The more well known businesses begin to accept and use it, the harder it is to use that same line over and over.

Is it fair to say then, that Bitcoin is not completely decentralized? I am only asking to better my understanding, but it seems there is some amount, even if minor, of centralization.

The only completely and utterly decentralized bitcoin-like system I can think of would have every person using it write and run their own code.

On computers that they built themselves.

Communicating over a wireless mesh network where each node in the mesh was controlled by a single person who wrote all the code and built all the hardware....

Some of you may already heard of Numers stations, powerful radio stations heard around the globe that broadcast seemingly random lists of words and numbers. It got me thinking that pronouncing Bitcoin addresses and privkeys would sound similar.

Would it be cool if we had HAM operators runing automated SPV bitcoin nodes that broadcast in loop every last N blocks. Could be done with speech synthesis and AFAIK it does not violate HAM license since the broadcast data is in fact public.

That would allow even a paper and pencil way for bitcoin to work.
